About RABDF

The Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers is the only independent, specialist sectoral body dedicated to representing the interests of practical British dairy farmers. We are striving to ensure a more viable and sustainable future for British dairy farming. With the increasing legislation and financial constraints facing the industry, our role is more vital than ever.
Our voice has to be strong if it is to be heard. We want every dairy farmer in Britain to become a member of our association. The more members we have the greater our impetus, which will in turn improve our chances of making sure your voice is heard wherever it can have influence.
Alongside our lobbying activities, the RABDF also run an annual programme of events designed to provide dairy farmers with opportunities for technology and knowledge transfer. There is no greater example of this than the Livestock Event, which we organise in July each year in order to provide dairy farmers with a unique forum for sector specific information exchange. Our members receive two free tickets to Livestock Event each year amongst many other substantial benefits.

Livestock Event: the National Dairy Show

Featuring seven breed classes and including three national shows

Three national breed shows plus classes for four different breeds will headline the National Dairy Show staged at Livestock Event, at The NEC, Birmingham on 8 and 9 July and supported by new sponsor, Elanco.

The 300 available stall places will be occupied by entries for national annual shows for Ayrshire, Brown Swiss and British Friesian cattle societies, together with entries for Holstein, Jersey, Guernsey and Dairy Shorthorn classes.

New to the event this year is a commercial stalls area for pedigree breeders with dairy cattle for sale.

“Dairy continues to remain firmly at the heart of Livestock Event with almost 50% of last year’s visitors coming to see the livestock judging and they asked for more,” explains event director, Matt Knight. “Consequently, this year we are pleased to welcome three different breeds staging their national shows at the event, as well as classes for more breeds. All are well aware that Livestock Event provides the best opportunity in the country for breeders to show their pedigree cows to commercial dairy farmers milking over 80% of the UK’s cows, along with international visitors; the 2014 event attracted representation from 23 countries.

“This event has become renowned for not onlyoffering free stall places but also for being the best equipped in the UK – a temperature controlled environment and prestigious prizes coupled with first class facilities for both stock and stockmen.”

Elanco’s dairy marketing manager, Fiona MacGillivray says: “We are delighted to demonstrate our support for the dairy industry and sponsor the National Dairy Show. We are looking forward to backing some of the UK’s best genetics, being part of the ringside buzz and enjoying the camaraderie.”

· Show schedules can be downloaded from www.livestockevent.co.uk The closing date for stalls is 19 June.

Livestock Event: first ever live calf rearing demonstration

The NEC, 8 and 9 July

The UK’s first ever live calf rearing demonstration at an event will be featured at Livestock Event, the sector’s largest business to business event to be staged on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 July at The NEC, Birmingham. Designed to showcase all types of housing and feeding systems, the demonstration will feature live calves in igloos, conventional and specialist buildings including the Roundhouse, all of which will be located on the outside apron to Hall 17, the main livestock hall.

The feature will be complemented by a series of seminars delivered by leading calf specialists discussing the latest in housing, feeding and management systems.

“The dairy unit’s youngstock have remained the herd’s Cinderella’s for far too long,” says event director, Matt Knight. “The quest is now on to get these animals off to a better start which has been scientifically proven to significantly enhance overall dairy herd performance and farm profitability. This new demonstration, which will be run under veterinary supervision with strict protocols, is designed to do just that.”

Demonstration sponsor, DeLaval’s Kate Davies comments: “We plan to highlight just how significant first rate calf management can be. A well developed and healthy heifer will generally calve earlier and produce more milk over the course of its life. Successful reproduction is at the heart of the dairy business – the weeks leading up to calving and the first few weeks of a calf’s existence shape its lifetime. Calf rearing is also central to the company’s vision of making sustainable food production possible.”

· Acutely aware of the UK dairy industry’s extraordinary difficult times, the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers, is providing every UK dairy farm with one complimentary ticket. All farmers will also have the opportunity to purchase additional tickets for partners and herdsmen at a favourably reduced rate.
