What is going on with gatekeeper at the minute?

The value of this data is massive,

Absolutely right. The worrying thing is how the supply side of the industry is rapidly developing into an oligopoly of a few big players. The same ones also happen to be the buyers at the other end. It's all OK while they're playing nicely but they will soon be in a position to really turn the screw if they aren't already. Look at how British Sugar negotiate with their growers. They don't. They know all their growers costs, yields, distance and cost to processing and therefore margin. They then set the price.

Frontier are setting up their own free recording service, so are Agrii and I presume others. All driven by the same motive to get data. How can you negotiate premiums and prices if the other party knows your hand to last penny.

We are being sold out by those that claim to help us and provide service to us, I was told today that even the NFU sell data harvested from members - is this correct @Guy Smith ?

(I expect the silence will be deafening for the above question !)

Well as soon as myjohndeere is working properly and gatekeeper agronomist can export to it I'm out... Costs to much for useless support. Fudge them !!!

actually I fod their support very good and like the software, its expensive but thats its only big fault IMO

but this move to sell our data is a step too far and has exposed the real business model and reason that FW bought a software company, I REALLY dont like it and despite the option to opt out I don't trust them anymore so I am going to start looking for alternatives

Interesting I got the message this morning after an update and I am not on data secure, all backed up locally. Whether that is an error or an indication that they can get the data even on data local I'm not sure. The guy I spoke to to opt out sounded like he was getting weary of it and didn't put up much of a fight!

The NFU used to sell data via a third party because we bought some for mail shots. Whether they do now I have no idea.

Not a GK user but srikes me there is no doubt commercial value in the data being harvested the software should be at least free.
I use a few google programs and never spent a penny,

An Update: GateKeeper Data Project
We have started to invite our GateKeeper Grower customers to take part in an exciting new project. We plan to deliver an innovative new service which can be used by businesses to benchmark their performance, view trends and analyse information helping them to improve their decision making process. This will be at no extra cost to Growers, and will be delivered through a GateKeeper 'dashboard'.
In order to do this we need to aggregate all the millions of lines of data in GateKeeper into trend information, so we can provide readable charts and graphics that you can use to see opportunities to improve your business. The more Growers who participate, the better the service and quality of the insight we can provide. A message explaining this is currently being delivered via GateKeeper synchronisation.
We started inviting existing GateKeeper customers to participate in the project at the beginning of April and we have had a very positive response so far. Whilst many have expressed a keen interest in the project and the information that we can give back to our users, there has been some misinformation and inaccurate comment being circulated about this project.
By presenting you with the following information, we hope you will be able to make an informed choice about whether you want your business to be included in this project.

  • We will not aggregate data from organisations who have asked to be excluded from the project.
  • An Organisation can Opt-Out or Opt-In at any time.
  • Customers will be presented with this trend analysis/benchmarking data via a new GateKeeper 'dashboard' - there will be no extra charge for this (it will be delivered as part of their normal annual support fee).
  • We are not interested in personal details, i.e. email, address, contact details. These will not be made available or sold to any other companies.
  • The aggregated data is completely anonymous. For example, we will never show business names, farm names or the names of any of your personnel.
  • Nothing will be personally identifiable to your farm as it will be combined with all other participating GateKeeper data-sets.
  • Sensitive data, such as the price paid by an individual businesses for their products, will not be identifiable.
  • The aggregated data may also be used by Farmers Weekly in editorial articles and by other agricultural organisations to provide trend analysis for the industry.
  • There are already many organisations collecting and analysing data within the agricultural industry. We want to provide a unique new service that not only gives valuable information back to our customers but which is produced by an organisation which is independent of suppliers or manufacturer.
We are starting to work with groups of farmers and agronomists to ask them about the sort of information they think would benefit their businesses. We have also appointed a Data Scientist to bring it together. As a result of this we plan to have some illustrations showing the type of information we would like to present to our users ready for you to see at events during the summer.
As this service is in development we will write to our customers with more information later in the year. In the future we will make contact with our GateKeeper Agronomist Organisations to explain the benefits of the project in more detail and invite their Organisation to take part.
If, having read the message that appears in GateKeeper, you wish to be part of this great new service then there is nothing you need to do. However, if you’d prefer your business to be excluded then simply call the number shown in the message and we will opt you out.
If you have any queries about this project please call 01594 545032, we'll be happy to discuss these with you. Some additional FAQs can be found

Kind Regards

Well they will not be having my data that the agronomists holds that's for sure. They can stick it where the sun don't shine.

It's just a complete con and extremely bad of them to do this.

Even if you opt out I wouldn't trust them to actually still take the information.

The FAQ link at the foot of the email above takes you to this page & the FAQ are:

GateKeeper Data
For more than fifteen years Farmplan has produced the best workflow office tools such as Cattle Manager, Business Manager and recently GateKeeper (which we took ownership of last year) to help farms with compliance and help them get the best from crops and livestock.
We now want to offer new services designed to help farmers and suppliers improve their performance and products. These will be based on aggregated, anonymous data from the thousands of records held in GateKeeper.
I'm a GateKeeper user - what are you planning to do for me?
As part of your GateKeeper subscription we will be able to give you useful data and analysis to help you understand what is happening on other farms across the country and how you compare with them. You can use this with your agronomist to see if there are any practices you could tweak which could improve your performance. We would love to include you in this.
What else will you do with the data?
Suppliers would receive information on, for example, total crop planted in an area of the country, helping them to improve products, distribution and supply. One result of this could be to reduce the risk of shortages of key products in particular regions. We will also run articles in farming media giving tips and good practice ideas for the good of the industry based on this aggregated data.
What is aggregated data?
Aggregated data is data created by bringing thousands of anonymous records together to show trends based on historical information. Your records are combined with thousands of others so you and your individual data can't be identified.
So my individual data is safe?
You will not be identifiable at all, and we will never pass on information about an individual farm or farm business as part of this process.
What do you need to do?
Over the next few weeks, you will receive a message when you sync in GateKeeper. When you receive this, if you are happy to be included and get access to our new services, do nothing and we will automatically include you. If you want to be excluded, call us on 01594 545032 and we will opt you out.
If I opt out, does this alter my services from GateKeeper?
We are delighted to have you as a GateKeeper customer. All the services and support you receive from GateKeeper will continue. But when we introduce the new data and analysis services you will not be able to use them, as we will not be able to use your data to compare your farm with others.
If you have any questions, please call us on 01594 545032.
