What fert and rate for last dose on milling wheat will garantee a 13% protein?

Obviously liquid N mix? I realise there are no guarantees but I would like 13% protein, though with the high yield like last year. If the good lord supplies the right weather. (y)

It was a serious question, as I was wondering what others used for their last dose on milling wheat to help get the proteins. Liquid N mainly I take it, I've never used it but may try some this year?

I used to use 40 kg/ha of N as ammonium nitrate at flag leaf for Warburtons. Late N for protein needs to go on no earlier than the end of stem extension or it might end up in vegetative growth instead of going into the ear.

I haven't used Nufol on the ear. What timing do growers use that at? Milky ripe?

There are no guarantees of protein content as yield will dilute it. If it does, be thankful that you have extra tonnes in the shed which will be worth more than the claims on the heap!

I am aiming to get 10t/ha of 13% milling wheat. To get this, we will aim for 300kg/ha of N, split roughly 20/40/40%. All urea / ans based. 100kg SO3. Nothing on the ear as end user doesnt like it. .....

.....but I would start by planing a wheat like Cordiale or Crusoe with a good protein to start with.

I use 200-220Kg N at normal timings, 30 solid AN at about GS37, and 30 as foliar urea (home mixed in 200l water).
Usually works, even at 10-11 tph last year on one block. Normally get 9-10 tph. Usually got XI19 at 13% at those yield levels as a continuous wheat, good variety, but lots of straw.

60 kg /ha of N as Nufol applied at boot split, seems to work as only had one claim from 9,700 T to Warburtons this year. All applied at night to avoid scorch and better uptake by the plant. Spoken to EA about the rate (on top of 220 kg N) they were happy as it has been applied using N sensor. the contract with Warburtons prevents us spraying it on the ear.

I'm sure I read a post before on here somewhere of someone putting on 50 KG/Ha AN as a late protein boost ..anyone doing that with consistent results ? or does it really need to be liquid ?

40kgs from melted urea - takes total to 220 N which is plenty if i get a realistic average of 8.5-9t for protein but not enough if by some miracle we average over 10t - not a total disaster as to some extent you can be happy that the extra yield went some way towards covering the lack of milling premium

you have to be realistic though, I think many farms use too much N is hope of yields they rarely actually get

use to do it will solid AN years ago - you just have to be a few weeks earlier

Not that I grow milling wheat, but on shallow chalk I'm applying 230 - 240 kg/ha N to get 9 - 10 t/ha of feed wheat. Proteins are 10 - 11% so hardly excessive. RB209 states only 55% nitrogen use efficiency but my search for the Hoy Grail is to find out why this is the case & try to improve it with organic matter.

I have good results with both methods, if we are in a dry period mid may onwards I switch to liquid foliar if we have rain forecast I keep with granular as it helps my work load in june but I cannot say one is better than the other imo if managed correctly
