Spreading Urea

Been spreading Granular Urea this year with our Amazone spinner and got the dreaded stripes now showing in some fields but not all. Tray tested in first field and thought it was ok

I think the wind must have been effecting it more in some fields than others.

Can any spinners reliably spread urea to 24m or should I stick to more expensive AN?

I do find the Amazone a pain to get set right.

Other option for the future would be to look at liquid however with only 400 ac of arable I might struggle to justify it.

What does the forum think- New spreader, Liquid or just buy for expensive fert?

Also had striping with Kuhn and Bredal so check the product quality ...... is it soft and breaking up into dust? Are the disc vanes in good order? Are the discs spinning at full speed when under load?

We switched to liquid as its just an awful lots easier as there are no bags, it goes in a bowser and its delivered as you use it. Only change you need to make to the sprayer is buying a set of application bars.

Weaving spreader here and never had stripes - ever - this year we have and a friend of mine . Used more urea this year with higher sulphur content is what I am blaming - last dressing had no 2 son stood in middle of 2 tramlines as I bombed up and down trying different things with the spreader . In the end we lifted it higher , ran at 600rpm and took a bolt out of the long vanes and replaced with a thinner one to get more throw. Its helped but stripes can still be seen. It was generally windier this season and spreading at 12.4 mph too fast ? but its the same speed as the last few years.

I'm a first time user of UREA and it took a while to get the Amazone spreader set up. Product quality is an issue. Origin Granular Urea was good, but i used some 'Diamond' Urea and that just broke up into dust.

Tray tested here , the bloke doing the test had said there were three different sources of urea bunns has sourced and were different to test each time , been using urea for years through an amazone on 24 m and never stripped our corn , those who have get a tray test done

Liquid in some form or other, upgrade the sprayer a wee bit maybe with auto shut off, don't need a new sprayer for that. Keep spreader for P and K. Job done. There are people out there who will supply a "free" tank or you can buy your own. Liquid fert can come from Agrii, Yara, omex or frontier, although the latter are just selling on omex or Yara product at the moment. If you deal with frontier may be worth talking to them as they are keen for trade and if you sell grain to them it may help with payment terms.

Do wonder if I was getting variations between bags though. Two deliveries of Bunns all in same shed.

I did Tray test and thought it was ok. Got my own trays with this spreader to stop this problem.

We also use a lot of blended fertilisers and even though we can tray test generally have to guess where to start with settings and you can spread a field or even more before you find the correct settting.

Amazones fert setting service is useless when not using standard product.

Amazone seem to be the spreader you hear of people having most problems with.

All the others Kuhn, Vicon, Bogabelle, Teagle have at least a double overlap so settings are more forgiving

Why are Amazone so popular?

Amazone last a long time & are reasonably well built.

My ZAM Ultra is a right PITA. The trimmers at the front help powder my AN & despite tray testing branded Yara product I have striping AGAIN this year. No wind at spreading time either. FFS.

Bogabelle have shorter vanes & spin faster which to me risks breaking the granules/prills. Do they still have overlap at 30m+?

Changed to liquid this year on a similar acreage and wouldn't look back. Accuracy of headlands was the main consideration.

not far from me a AN user has some lovely stripes, you can get stripes with any product if you don't tray test and adjust correctly

I was once told that you need a 33% plus variation in spread pattern before you can see stripes so a lot of perfectly even looking solid spread fields may also not be as good as they should be or appear to be

liquid has been difficult this year though to add balance - very hard to avoid scortch, have had a bit of tipping at 2nd and 3rd applications for the first time in several years, I don't think it effects yield, just looks a bit bad for a few days !

I think I will look into liquid a bit more. We just have a front and back spray combo of 2000 litres. I guess it would be ok for a while- mostly ring fence only a small amount away from home.

Headland losses in our small fields are something which has been pissing me off for a while too.

biggest yield increase I think I have had is from headlands performing as well as field middles, if your not farming big fields it can really pull your average yield down

I had this last year, went liquid this year , unlikely to go back to solids
