Price is around the going rate for a simple guarded complete shaft.

It is a job to say exactly how much bigger than the original shaft the new one is, but it looks good from here. If it is as heavy duty as you imply, the price is almost a bargain.

Going to start slowly knockin me Heid against a stone wall, took the new PTO up earlier, went to fit it and realised the PTO is splined at both ends while the topper ( rhino) takes a bolted smooth shaft! Duh
And the store shut at 12, just hoping they can swop it with a PTO that will fit on Monday, or do these kinds of kit need to be ordered in?

You may be lucky. Or not.
It could be that if they don't have a complete suitable shaft, that they have the yolk that can be fitted instead of the splined one.

Some brands are buggers for fitting non-standard shafts. They do it on purpose of course.

Apparently it's common on compact tractors but rare on "propa tractors";) but luckily a mate has a full length one from a defunct pole borer and the bloke at Carrs Billington has taken his back and offered a refund or a credit note, given his help in the matter I will take the note,
We are now all up and running, touch wood;)

Finally got to put her to work today topping, no bother at all apart from her running on the warm side of normal, and the fuel gauge? is their a fault or is this the most economical tractor in the universe, never budged from full?

They are one of the most economical diesel engines iof the era, far ahead of ford, ih and perkins in that respect

however, the fuel gauge can be a bit vauge, its not damped, so going over rough ground the needle will fly about all over the place

if its reading full, thats an earth problem, so its another wiring check by the looks of it

Had one of these 996's in the past, sold by Burgess' if i remember, had it feeding over the winter with a loader, but not really up to horsing around round bales of silage - had the q cab DB cab that you hit your shoulder off every time you tried to climb out, Jesus i hated that thing, and the clutch!!!.. and the gear noise...and those gears...To really sweeten me it developed a crack on the l/h side of the block, weeping coolant...a common enough issue i gather..was a happy day to see it leaving the place...but strangely i'd buy another (and some ear protection) for light field work...
