Difference between Oats and Black Oats?

Is there a difference? Why should I pay more for black oats when I can use normal oats off farm? This is for a BG reducing cover crop probably paired with vetches.
I think the difference is about £350/T, in other words you might be better off drilling your own even if you use slightly more.

The root biomass with black oats is meant to be much bigger i think?

This was taken yesterday in Lincs, sown on 14th March..... not very big in my opinion considering it's been in the ground for 11 weeks and had 60kg N

Saw a price for BO yesterday £1400 per tonne ! Have used spring oats, fast growing in the autumn, produce lot of biomass quickly. Cheap, available, mix with poss fodder rape, vetch, peas if you can find some locally .
Cover crops = kerching for the trade .... Doesn't need to be ! ;)

Whoever is charging you £2000 a tonne is making a MASSIVE profit margin!
I'm not being charged £ 2000/Tonne ... pretty much, up until this season ,where it seems that every man and his dog has jumped on the bandwagon with cover crops, black oats were simply unobtainable in the UK and much of Europe too ..
I was probably the first person to import them for cover crops into the UK four years ago after scouring the whole of the UK and Europe and eventually finding a seed company in France to supply them ..several forum members had them to try ... but when they start off expensive and you're only wanting a couple of pallets, all the extra transport costs both in Europe and here add up ...then add on a (very) small margin and they end up even more expensive ! the £2000 was just rounding up...
of course if you were to import by the artic load then costs would be much reduced as it seems is the case now for some of the bigger suppliers

you are absolutely right. It'a a absolute hype. Situation with BO from South America is that only a certain tonnage is allowed to be imported and there are quotas for every country as well. At least that was the situation 2 years ago.
Now we will have a couple of years where we will experience a consolidation as quite a number of mixes are not worth the money. I call them cheap copies. there is a little more to it than just mixing various seeds together. The differences have to be found out and will be found out in due time.

20 years ago I have a French varaity named " Sirene"
Il get 10kg from France , drill it on 1000m2 and get 581kg
Non want to buy blackoats so I drop the seed after some years.
I might find some blackoats seed and start to producent seed for export to UK?

Acke,
are you talking about Avena Strigosa or about Avena Negra ?? Makes a big difference.
By the look at your yield from 1000m2 it might have been Avena Negra, from the Strigosa you`ll get half of that, which makes it so expensive.

We drilled about 5 acres around our no-till potato trial plot, gave it no spray or fertiliser. It's a nice trouble free crop to grow, I'll say that for it, although we did have, as the US Marines nearly say, a 'black oats down' situation a couple of months ago when the whole field went from vertical to severe leaning.
Combined it on Saturday, it half filled the grain trailer...now if anyone wants to buy it for £2000/ton please get in touch

Typical ! You let your poor brother hoover up some flat oats and you want to sell them off cheap.

PS Your spud harvester mate is pulling a sicky, he's got a bad limp.
