Cover crops

In case it interests anyone I am offering a direct drilling service to establish cover crops and any other cereals or oilseeds. I'm covering the South of England with my Dale drill. If you're interested give me a call or DM me. I'm on 07790032573.

It's a Pedders No. 1, but in this area mostly fodder radish (which the cattle ignore), oats and linseed. Some sunflowers about and phacelia has made a late run, took a long time to get going anywhere, but romping away now. Some oats about to show ears, I imagine frost will nip them off. Very lush.

I am a totally new to the idea of cover cropping but think it definitely has a place on our farm. We have lots of beef cattle which we winter outside on maize stubble as a loafing area on some very light gravel and they are bedded and fed on an outside corral. For various reasons we have binned off most of our maize area in favour of spring barley. What would be the best cover crop to graze? I can DD into the barle with my versadrill as soon as the bales are off. We are only 1/2 hour from the Groundswell event and i'd really like to go and take dad as he's a total skeptic but if if we can grow some cheap fodder he might change his mind. The only problem is that I will hopefully be knee deep in hay and haylage making (unless wet) when Groundswell is on.

Any advice gratefully received

Many thanks in advance

Mark
