You cannot claim for grain burnt in biomass boilers.
What i was asking is, is there a testing process so that Oats could be burnt in a biomass boiler and still be eligible for rhi.
Are are a far more renewable fuel than wood.
They require little or no fertiliser and only 1 pass with a herbicide

I have burnt cereals in mine for 7 years, calorific values for these are easily found....compare very favourably to pellets I recall.....show me the maths anybody?...mumbo - jumbo and jargon- free would be much- appreciated as would a complete lack of smoke and mirrors....!!

Are you claiming Rhi for that then Walton?

No....my boiler was installed before the RHI was devised....so nothing would qualify! I am still waiting for someone to show me how wrong I am about the maths....perhaps some boiler salesman could convince me to change to a new one that will allow me access to the riches of the RHI....

I have used beans rape peas oats barley wheat and even......cleaver seeds over the years....used 2% lime with all of them. Only problem was the peas had some perfectly- sized stones to block the ash screw.Of course no RHI payments....still waiting for some clever person to explain where I am going wrong. I won't hold my breath though!

RHI pays even after buying pellets, so you would have been financially better of with a new boiler and bought in fuel. but if your happy just burning your own stuff without the expense of a new boiler then why not, cant fault it really, excellent way of clearing out remnants of cereals etc

Problem is.....my 20kw boiler cost £4500 8 years ago.....good quality Danish, then ,when RHI comes in, boilers like that cost an awful lot more all of a sudden!! I dread to think what one costs now, so I really don't think it would pay me to change now.I could even use my plumber who installed the old one....cos he doesn't have the right certification. I would have to use one that has paid for the course....and he passes the cost on to......me!!! All in all its a complete load of bureaucratic perfection.

pellets and rhi, at original tarrif cost 4.4p/kw, you get 8.9p, so net income 4.5p
wheat costs 3.2 ish,, just a cost no income,
pellets at £365 would work out zero net income

so wheat is same as pellets at £500

until you run out of tarrif 1 and drop to 2.3p from 8.9, (4.4-2.3 = 2.1) ,still cheaper than wheat

assuming boiler costs are similar

Thanks for that.....a bit of an eye opener.....could not persuade me to join the gravy train though...I like the idea of being independent...and the fuel I use costs next to nothing really, I would not like to justify its use to some pencil-neck !

Do you mind me asking x where?

Eastern european dumping pellets on UK market. Not going to provide details as I have no guarantee in respect of quality or sustainability criteria. The reason why I have been sent the details is because I am registered as a BSL approved wood pellet supplier.

They are probably crap.
I know of a company that purchased quite a volume (000's of tonnes) cheaply last year and lived to regret it. Problems were due to extremely poor quality leading to major boiler problems. Just what the boiler owner wants on xmas day, I dont think its worth the agro.
