Keeping pigs

Going to get 2 1 year old pigs on Saturday just for fun.

I have a house and yard for them.

I'm going to bed then with straw and feed them scraps and pig meal.

But don't know how much meal to feed them and what veterinary they might need

Advice please

Kitchen scraps are a no-no, but commercial, unprocessed food waste is ok (uncooked/uncut veg)
1lb/day/month of age up for weaners/growers, yours will be on adult rations, which i thnk (i hope) is 9lb/day.

Agree 2.5 to 3kg. They will prob scream for food everytime they see you, as they will associate you with the food but try not too overfeed them and have hippo's for sows as will be difficult to pull it back off them. Routine vacs we used to give was ery and parvo, can't remember of anything else off the top of my head. May need worming once in a while. Your vet will give you a good protocol.

We inherited a couple of old sows but are having trouble getting them in pig, so have gone down the weaner route. We just bought 4 yesterday and thought we might give them a dose of noromectin to worm them before we get them home. Our old girls love all the apples this year.

If they are old girls that's probably why you can't get them in pig.
The folks who gave them to us said they were 5 y.o. and 4 litters but it is easy to forget a few years. I don't know if this is too old? They were also excessively fat, but have come back to a healthier size now. I tried A.I. and all the signs were ideal, but she didn't take. I believe they can go off the boil if not mated again soon enough?

Pigs will live a long time but most commercial sows would be well gone by that point and would have had double the number of litters if they were that age. I would think your correct - if they got fat and had not had that many litters they will be much harder to get in pig. A boar might be a better option as everything has to be spot on with AI ime.

Go to Mart or pig farmer/smallholderand buy a young killing boar. Run him with the girls for a month or two then kill him.
