long slow drive

Bloke I worked with drove a combine when he went to another job, they had 2,at start of season they took them both down to Essex, cut every thing there, then drove them up to either Stockton or Darlington where next farm was cutt all that then drove them back up to finish off at last farm at Berwick, used to close Tyne tunnel in middle of night, that would be about 22 years ago

In 1975 father-in-law drove a 12' cut Ransome Cavalier from Cambridge machinery sale to Worcester. 120 miles, no by-passes, so straight through the middle of Bedford, Northampton, Daventry, Leamington, Warwick and Stratford..................with the table on !!! I did the same in the '80s with a Claas Senator, JD 950 and JD 985. They'd done the A14 by then and we'd seen the light and took the tables off. 9 hours for the JD's and 2 days for the Claas (bloody slow). Under 6 hours tho' in a Leyland 272 Synchro. ( one of the nicest tractors we ever bought from Cambridge).

1976 father took mf 135 on duals with 24' scammel trailer with steel ramps from just south of Birmingham to Bury St Edmunds to collect 3 vintage John Deere tractors and a mounted finger bar mower. I wouldn't be that keen with a draughty cab but I bet it didn't use that much fuel. Unloading at this end one of the rusty ramps gave way with father on a three wheeler. Luckily it only flopped over on its side. If it had been the four wheeler it would of rolled and crushed him. Scary moment as a young lad watching. Must have been over two hundred mile round trip.

Where the JDs bought from S W Cross and son Ixworth?

Farm I worked on had land in Billericay and up by Felixstowe did a few trips in 7840s up a12. Not sure of distance. One day took a 30k 4955 home to Chelmsford that was a fair trip!
