Lock up your Land Rovers, insurer warns after spate of thefts in Devon

Farmers and other rural dwellers are being warned to lock up their Land Rovers and all terrain vehicles (ATVs) after a spate of thefts across the South West.

Rural insurer Cornish Mutual is reporting an upsurge in thefts of farm vehicles over the last ten days with South Devon particularly badly hit. It follows a spate of thefts of tools and machinery from farms and rural workshops and garages.

And it comes as production of the Land Rover Defender, the workhorse of the countryside, comes to an end and demand for the iconic brand increases with Land Rover enthusiasts anticipating rising values and declining availability.

Graham Nicholls, Underwriting Manager for Cornish Mutual, said: “We have dealt with two Land Rover thefts in as many weeks in South Devon, and other members of the Field Force team in the county are reporting similar things. I’m also aware of a number of ATV and horsebox thefts. We are telling our members to take extra care at the moment and make sure keys are not left in vehicles when unattended.

“We know that criminals tend to target a specific area at a time and then move on, so it’s important that we make sure that we all keep vigilant and report any unusual behaviour or vehicles.”

Cornish Mutual is recommending that vehicles are locked or securely stored away overnight. They are also recommending that Members sign up to the Devon & Cornwall Police Rural Engagement Team’s popular community messaging facility. The service alerts local people via email, text or phone on current crime issues they should be aware of.

Most people round here have had one nicked at some point. Us included. We did what everyone else at the time did, claim the insurance and buy something else so it didn't happen again.

They are probably thieving to re-sell. Question is, who buys the stolen property? Other farmers? Are they exported? Where do they end up?

A lot of them, in bits and sold as parts, a spate around here last year of them being winched off drives or out of yards, and stripped of parts. (n)

Main reason why I sold mine in the end. Sick of wondering if it would still be where I left it. Last straw was when I found 3 'lost' blokes with torches checking it out in the yard at 11pm one night.

Put a 3g mobile phone in it on silent attached to a car charger and then you can trace it.
Firstly put in a solar powered electric fence unit then the checkers get more than they bargained for when they try the door.
