This is a loaded question. As there is a lot of experienced people out there some with 25/30 years experience. But maybe only ONE days skill It's the skilled bit you have to pay for Big difference Now a skilled man who can look after him self can work on own and not need his hand holding is worth double what a seat warmer is

Near minimum wage for somebody cards-in on your kit. £10-12 for self-employed.

You can wax lyrical about skill and output all you want - there are plenty of competent drivers out there so it's a buyer's market.

Also, stacking shelves in ASDA may well pay more... but that's not the point, is it? They DON'T want to work in a supermarket, but they DO want to drive tractors.

I've been on £15 an hour for the last 4 years but I'm doing less of that type of work now. One of my employers did go for a cheaper option a couple of years ago. When he called me one morning to come and replace a young idiot he'd taken on I charged £16 for the rest of the season. IMO the cheapest option is often the most expensive in the long run.

One thing I'd say to any potential self employed who are on low money is that it is possible to make your average rate up using various methods in your timekeeping. Employers ought to think about this as well when they think they're getting someone cheap. If you want someone to want to work for you, treat them fairly. The ball IS NOT always in your court.
