Saw my first dandelion here today, the elder is coming into leaf, but I planted a tree and the ground is so cold I lost all feeling in my hands. Rose in full leaf, and Nicotiana coming through with new leaf. I wonder if we get a really bad cold spell what it will mean for these plants.

Daffs locally/village came and went in December......... I think soil temp. here is actually down a bit now...maybe slowing grass growth.

Hmm... bit of frost here this morning, biting NE wind too. Prediction for tonight of ~ -7 degrees...

I guess the big thing will be whether these few cold days are the end of it, or if there is going to be a real sting in the tail of March, it's happened before often enough.

Come on Italy!!

Save your energy for the day your own beloved nation plays England. Judging by the way they played against Scotland they will need every ounce of your support! *

Spring is only showing by day length here. Few daffs out, no snowdrops but the hedges & trees are budding up nicely. The jetstream forecast still shows no sign of anything but the wet weather interspersed with the odd dry day.

*So will England, judging by the way they played in Rome!

So what happened to this early spring then?
Grass has stopped growing and turned yellow.
Each year we put a spray on the apples exactly at bud burst. Timing is critical so I am well aware of what the trees are doing, normally this spray has been put on around about the 15th March. Last year was a late spring and didn't happen until 4th April. Not burst this year yet and look a week off probably.

Yes, we've had about 10 dry cold days, which was very welcome, but now it's back to wet and windy again.
Spring doesn't start for me till it's dry AND warm.

Dads favourite for the time of year - 'as the day lengthens, the cold strengthens.'

I couldn't not like that statement. My old neighbour who taught me most of what I know about sheep, and who is sadly no longer with us as of last February had a lot of old sayings, and that was his favourite at this time of year.

Commandeered dad's unheated greenhouse this year planted, my first lot of veg 3 weeks ago. Lettuce appeared at 10 days closely followed by broccoli, 4 of the 6 cauli have now poked their heads through, no sign of the parsnips or leeks yet though but tht's maybe because I've planted them in tubes. Outside my garlic are growing like topsy and the onions are just starting to emerge, rosemary and tarragon didn't notice the winter, parsley and chives going well, mint beginning to get going. Ist & 2nd early tatties were planted around the same time. Run out of planters for the maincrop so anyone got any empty mineral tubs?

Grass is starting to grow but nothing exciting yet
