I grew up on the farm but have done other things since now. I've just passed 40 which I assume is why they keep banging on about being under 40. Story of my life. Anyway, got my hands on some land and want to go farming as of Jan 1 2015. I've got no entitlements and never have had any. What are the chances of getting some from the national reserve if such a thing exists. I can't get together the cash to buy entitlements right now but that few grand a year would certainly help me on my way.

2 chances slim and none , and slims outta town , sorry .

Just accept all of the advantages that being over 40 brings. Eg the optimum combination of physical ability, experience and intelligence that gives us a huge advantage over the whippersnappers.
We just don't need any paltry handouts from the EU or Government to make a go of things.
It's all very ageist anyway.

Pasty, are will you be over 41 on the 1st jan 2015? if you are then you won't get on the young farmer scheme, but if you are still 40 on the 1st jan 2015, then you may be eligible :)

I think you should get a good no win no fee lawyer on the case and take them up for ageism. I really cannot understand how this can be legal, given all the other age legislation.

It seems like a waste of time trying to comply anyway. Farming has to be the primary income so i can't see what it's trying to achieve. I can't afford to farm alone as I have a mortgage to pay. What I spend on an agent working out how to get the payment, will outweigh what I end up getting.
