I know it's not answering your question per se but ..... 20 years ago we had our farm yard alarmed with a series of beam alarms that covered the entrance gates and the whole yard area. The main office and other important buildings such as the office, small powertool shed, machinery shed, etc etc all had intruder alarms fitted. We had a MASSIVE master blaster siren fitted to the top of one shed (where it could not be tampered with) plus a plethora of really good halogen lights about on the place. You could not access the entire yard or buildings area without setting the whole thing off. This entire system was also connected to our farm house.

If an intruder cut the locks to our gates to break in to the yard, they had 45 seconds of silence after actually walking or driving through the gates (quite a long time to think they had managed to gain entry successfully) and then the whole thing would go off in the most spectacular fashion :woot: ... the halogens would burst in to light, strobe blue boxes would start flashing, alarm bells would ring, the farmhouse would light up like a Christmas tree with all manner of sights and sounds and the Master Blaster would not only be scaring the bejesus out of the intruder but it was so loud they could actually hear it in the police station even though there was no dedicated link  . The whole effect was so spectacular that no would-be burglar wanted to hang about and so they would flee away always empty handed. This coupled with our mad large dog whom we would then let out to run down the yard first, ensured our safety when we went down to check what was going on.

We were of the opinion that you cant always stop a determined thief gaining entry (even if like us you have tall locked yard gates) however once they are in you can create conditions that makes them not want to hang about a second longer than they should.

CCTV is marvellous but I'd rather the scum bags leave BEFORE they've taken anything so that I don't have to rely on CCTV to identify them AFTER they have got away with my property. It was a specialist system but it has prevented several attempted thefts of trailers and tools and so it has been well worth it. And if you are troubled with persistent group offenders such as gypsies then word soon gets around that you have a very secure security system and so they will leave you alone.

Not what you asked but just thought it might be of interest to you given your third break-in in 6 - 7 months.

Set yourself up with a trade account with Cop Security. http://www.cop-eu.com

They sell good quality equipment and their technical knowledge is excellent meaning you can install your own system with ease. We have 12 cameras running off a 16 channel DVR at the moment and will be installing 4 more cameras shortly. One of the best bits was buying a ANPR camera which recognises number plates up to 120mph as this has helped us a lot.

With CCTV its better to spend another £50 per camera to get a quality picture than scrimp and save because when you do need to look at the footage and its all grainy due to poor camera quality, then the whole thing was a pointless idea in the first place. We have proven this many times over the last few years since we installed it.

Also recommend hardwiring the system in rather than relying on other methods because then faults are few and far between. It takes a bit longer but its worth it. One tip is when you've worked out your cable runs and you know you need 2 cables for example, make sure you install 4 because I'll guarantee you end up adding more cameras down the line.

2nd camera down is a good one and £49 each.

Excellent quality speed dome cameras about £250.

ANPR cameras starting at £240.

DVR's are good quality as well.

Its ok having a good cctv. Being able to record lowlife in action for prosecution though is a different matter in our experience.
I would reccomended certain types of detectors, with multiple zones and cctv.

Imo, it is never a good thing to go into too much detail regarding security.
Undesirables fear the unknown.
being able to detect, monitor, and arouse a blue strobe feeling to these hardworking fellows could have far more effect.

Maplin!! Good, well priced and work on many platforms. We can see ours on ipod iphone and laptop, even dial in from anywhere else.

Maplins!!!!!!.. CCTV is summit you want to be good, well installed and reliable.
I have maplin 4 cam setup, cant identify a face at 20 feet. The cheap cams will show you that a vehicle
or person has been around, and an idea of what they been up to. thats a world away from getting a number plate
or face able to stand up in court
Speak to a pro and be very specific about your needs in a written contract

Backup and support is also critical - run through a mock scenario where you want 30 mins of footage from 3am last night - when do you get it?(service level) what do you get?(format) what does it look like?(admissible as evidence in court)

I/r beams are the way to go, cameras are ok but unless you have someone watching the monitors 24/7 all you end up with is a great looking vid of people in hoodies nicking your stuff.

With the cameras you can set up intrusion zones so if movement detected in a predefined area a notification will be triggered and automated actions eg Light on, kennel door open, dog unleashed. Enjoy the recording.

Release the hounds :) that would make some rather fun viewing over a morning coffee watching a load of scum bags get chased round the yard by the dogs they had inadvertently released :)

If you are just after something to check up on an area there are quite a few good IP cams about for under £80

got an issue with the buggers driving up the farm drive then out into our wheat, not so bad when its just stubble but when its just been freshly drilled

need a system with one cam just to try and get a number plate, got 2 massive white dummy cameras up already but it just doesn't bother them! cant spend megabucks as i just don't have it:( barn is remote from the farm and as such has no phone/network etc so would just have to have one that recorded
