How to ask if they'll sell?

Just make him an offer he can't refuse..................
I notice that Cilvoden is back on the market, this time with a different agent (but the same asking price). Nicest 100 acre farm in Pembrokeshire, someone should buy it.

But it beats me why farmers think that one agent is any better than another at selling a farm.

Ahh, but maybe he has no cash and would welcome the sale? When you go to ask for investment, the laird will tell you he can't afford the steam off his shyte!
Estates are a mystery - I've seen then sell places just 'cos they were short of cash at that time, when it was obvious they should hold on; seen them sell land and retain houses, and also retain land and sell the houses, when it was obvious even at the time that neither course made any sense.

I wonder if many estates are, in effect, run by committee so that the wrong course of action is nearly always chosen?

I know of one 300 acre farm that was sold off the estate just because, as the agent and incoming landlord inspected it, some slates fell off a barn roof. They were in the frame of mind to sell, and the prospect of repairs just tipped the balance.

In the OP, I'd be very surprised if the owners were in the frame of mind to sell the freehold, unless a very generous (ie vacant possession) valuation was proffered.

Yes,back on with slight price reduction.I like the area a lot(was born there).Fantastic farm, but house a wee bit small for us,and I hate ROW's.I see Windberry Top has been sold. Not sure I'd want to spend rest of my life looking at Folly Farms car park though?.Am I too picky when looking at farms?.

Tragic news about the young lad next door to you.Very sad.

Not sure the car park's a problem, if you already own it? I'd be guessing that the vendors finally stopped fudging about and sold it to Folly Farm...

I'm a big fan of Cilvoden - tried to buy it in 1996 (vendor changed his mind about selling) and last year we suggested it again (vendor was popularly supposed to have changed his mind, but I think he's perfectly serious about selling) but decided to buy this place back instead. We'd probably have ended up in much the same position, though, 'cos then we'd have found buying the 70 acres belonging to the MacNamaras that's now for sale across the A4075 quite irresistable - especially as there is a paucity of buyers now virtually every local farmer has bought something.

It's tragic to lose a son at 19, and I notice a Scots lad was killed in a quad race out on Italy the same weekend, representing the national team.

I used to think that and that there is no was a multi million pound purchase could be done on impulse. I now realise that some people are much better at selling a dream. The extra cost of doing it right and adverising is tiny compared with someone thinking they must buy it

Suppose it depends on your relationship with the LL.... if you get on well then face to face. If you never see or hear from them it could be much different and you may have to go down the agent route.
One things for sure.....if you don`t ask you`ll never know.
