Roaming sims

I thought the question was about a subscription (SIM card) that allows access to all local networks. Most often a local SIM card only allows one to use the home network (the one that provided the SIM card). National roaming is an exception but it does not really help here (allows e.g. a 3 customer to use another network on 2G if they don't have their own coverage, meaning still one network only in a particular location).

I'm not aware of any special agreements that may well exist, allowing national roaming for these specific customers. The only roaming SIM I can think of is a SIM card from a foreign operator/service provider. I first thought this would be ridiculously expensive but perhaps it actually is a realistic option for some contractors with big machines now that EU put further limits on GPRS roaming charges.

I had a look at my roaming charges (a foreign operator from the UK perspective) and I believe (did not check) the costs follow the maximum EU allows. It is 0.248 € per megabyte. My RTK base puts some 3000 bits per second, roughly 32,5 MB per 24 hours. That would be about 8 Euros per day but they actually have a 2,99 € daily limit for 50 Mbytes.

If someone in the UK wanted to use my SIM card, it would cost about 3 Euros per day plus the monthly subscription fee (about 10 to 20 Euros per month). The data fees would run only when the machine is working. With my SIM one could use Vodafone, O2, t-mobile or ORANGE, whichever provides coverage.

Since I pay 2 Euros per month for data (plus a 2 Euro monthly fee), the above sounds pretty much for me. I have coverage at every place I can imagine the tractor would be able to go (or where I would be able to go without the tractor).

This is the straightforward roaming SIM solution that anyone can have and arrange, I guess it would be time for others to post their experience about some better deals.
