How to i find out if i can rent somewhere?

Hi all, we live on west sussex/hampshire border. There are lots of farms round here, with parts empty including neglected barns and buildings. We have tried approaching people about renting but many are un-manned in the day. What are your thoughts on letter dropping? Is there somewhere to look for rented places being advertised?
