Lambing

Thinking of about 60 this year so not big numbers by any stretch of the imagination, but have 2 batches of ground available next year so thinking of lambing my terminals early to try and take advantage of a better (in theory) market with the replacements lambing a month later and going onto the later ground! Would mean lambing over 2 months though so could be a bit drawn out as don't live on site

This year, 220 pedigree Charollais ewes, split half & half between a synchronised group in Dec and a naturally spread out group in March. 30-40 Charollais ewe lambs to lamb in March alongside the ewes. All those lambed (pure) inside.

Then 400 Highlander (& a few remaining Hartline) ewes and 120-130 Highlander ewe lambs, lambing outside in April to Highlander & Charollais tups, and maybe a few to a NZ Texel. Hopefully that flock will be as good as done in 3 weeks of warmth in early April.:)

Maintaining pedigree numbers at about that but steadily building Highlander numbers up as the farm (& grass) improves, aiming to get to 6-700 crossbreds lambing each year, which I should be able to handle on my own without too much hassle/work/bought feed.:)

Will lamb around 140 this year. Last year lambed in April but this next year trying to decide whether to lamb 40 late Feb/March to spread selling period. Mules and texelxmules and a few Meatlinc gimmers. Using Texel and Meatlinc tups looking to add either a beltex or beltex cross this time. All housed and lambed inside

Looking to push numbers up to 750 inc ewe lambs this time. Been around 600 for a while.
3 years into converting from mule and suffolk x mule to NZ Romney & NZ Texel crosses. Will be about 50 mules left and 50 suffolk x's left I guess this time.
So working mostly NZ Texel & Romney, and charollais rams.
Start lambing end of March.

Can we do used to as well, I will anyway

2000 scotch mule indoors then 3000 Welsh X Suffolk out, the out was a holiday, the indoors I would liken to building the road of bones wherever that is

I've got 35 welsh mountain ewes at the moment and hopefully buying another 50 or 60 at the sales in the autumn. Lambed early march last year, but will be april this year. Brought them inside as they started lambing last year as i was losing too many lambs to the fox. Planning to do the same again this year. Much easier to catch any problem ewes when inside.

Lambing 500 including ewe lambs. About 80 - 100 of the older ones lamb inside in February and the balance mid april outside. Mostly Highlander with a few pure Charollais. Put to Highlander and Charollais rams with a Logie Hybrid home to try as well this time.

75 ewes and 25 gimmers to tup this year. Down a bit from last year as I sold 15 triplet bearing ewes in the spring.
There is 20 lairg type NCC bred pure, 65 lleyn x ewes (not sure what to use on them this year, either a NZ Suffolk, lleyn or a home bred lairgy) and a small flock of 15 various breeds put to a dutch texel x texel ram to try and breed a few "flashy" lambs.

Daughter 9 has about 20 pedigree zwartables, son 11 has about 20 pedigree Kerry hills, otherwise depends on trade really, last autumn had 350 on tack till mid December they went back and inlamb ewes were reasonable, so bought 200 inlambers lambed them, trade was good so they all went with in a month of lambing as couples. Kids want to up the zwarbs and kerrys, and I would like to try a roussin on some mules.

600 Texel and Charollais cross ewes split between Lambing 1/3 indoor in Feb and 2/3 outside in April.
200 Highlanders ewes and 100 ewe lambs lambings outside in April.
This year 100 of my best 'maternal' continentals also going to a Highlander.

2500 easycare ewes. 1400 twins indoors and rest outside from March 20th.
Going to tup some older ewes with a Hampshire for some early lambs though. Also considering tupping the ewe lambs with a Chamoise???
