Cultipress/unipress

Hi has anyone made a home made cultipress or unipress of 3 metres or less to go behind a 100 hp tractor on lightish/medium land? Getting a big tractor is ok but a smaller machine would be better in my situation.

Any thoughts? Maybe it isn't a possible idea

yes I know what you mean about the levelling boards dragging hence why I thought a 2.8 or 2.5 metre one would be excellent as I could get the speed to help it all work.

I just feel the 3.3 metre one was just too heavy and big and with a busy road to navigate the police wouldn't like the width.

I am very aware of the cost of building something hence me asking on here. I have a feeling it is going to be an idea and nothing more due to the time and finding and building the thing. What is the lowest horse power people are using with a 4.6 metre unipress then?

I've put a twin row Vaderstad ripper tines on the front of a farmforce 3.4m twin cast ring press, 100hp pulled it easily working up stubbles and then on ploughing prior to combi drill, cost significantly less than a purpose built one.

Still hunting for a press. A Farmforce ringleader 3 metre one would be ideal but they aren't about. How crucial are the levelling boards/paddles on these trailed presses? What will a double row press with leading tines not do against one with paddles? Also would two passes of a unipress be the same as one pass of a cultipress or are the two very different machines? Soil id ploughed and a medium clay loam with some heavier parts of clay. One pass of a power harrow and you have a seedbed if that helps to give you an idea?

I keep thinking they would be good for creating a stale seedbed, straight into stubbles, but have yet to buy one/use one and see if it would work. Darn sight cheaper than a Carrier but obviously not as glamorous!!

We bought a 4.2m unipress a couple of weeks ago 2nd hand. Main intentions are to use it where we don't furrow press when ploughing, i.e headlands, smaller fields or those futher from the farm. So far on a range of soils its done a fantastic job, even heavy slabby clay, breaks down furrows, levels and leaves a weatherproof finish that we can leave till mid/late September and then either unipress again or powerharrow heavier bits to get a seedbed. Our weaving tine drill needs the seedbed made before it drills into it. We may also look into changing the drill soonish to something with some cultivation so we would plough and unipress asap after harvest and then with a month or so of weathering it could be drilled straight into without needing another pass from anything. It just gives us one more v useful option in our tillage armoury and so far I am v impressed. As said above the type of tines ( v heavy duty sprung tines) plus paddles and the DD ring press are a superb combination. If you pick the right timing after ploughing so that its hazeled for a few hours or so it makes a cracking job, to early and it can smear a bit, to late and clods can dry to much for it to deal with. Also tried it into some stubble to get a tilth for a cover crop which worked v well too, just cultivated the top 2 inches or so and pressed it down leaving a nice bit of soil to drill into. This might not work so well in either a v wet year, or a v dry year with baked out soil but this year its worked a treat. Also v well built and lots of weight to it. Quite enjoy using it really.
