Potato planting plans for 2015

I would have thought you should have made some money last year?

There was tens of thousands of tonnes dumped in Scotland last year. Unless you had sheds full of top washing piper, last year was not good.

Area planted last few years is still low compared to last ten years, just demand for fresh has dropped 15% in two years.

We grow Piper and Agria for chip shop trade -

2012 growing year, 22t acre sold average price £380 pt bagged.

2013 20t acre sold average £180 pt bagged.

2014 25t acre to sell at £100?

Big tax bill coming jan 2015:eek:

You just go carefull with money then when you get a year like this you still have plenty and with small farmers cutting back with acres nows the chance to push foward...

What sort of acreage are you on at the moment? Are they all contracted?

What sort of contract prices are on offer for harvest 2015 for processsing potatoes?

Production needs to drop MASSIVELY to 2012 levels. We need a million tonnes or more less production. Can't see that happening next year. Too many will take the gamble. Up here seed will be cheap as most big growers grow their own.

We have lost another 100,000
tons to Belgium with Aunt Bessey moving from Norfolk.

We need to come back to 4.5 million ton.
Plantings need to drop 25%

Even then will need a big drop over the water to do the trick.

As the saying goes, the bigger you are,the harder you fall. Our cost of production will be a lot less than many larger growers,no rented land, very little machinery depreciation and mostly family labour but at current prices still making a loss, anyone that thinks they can grow spuds for £80t or less should be looking at there costs again, can't be done.Packers and processors won't pay any more than they have to and in a year of plenty will be very choosey on contracted material,i would think contracted tonnage will either be slashed or prices will be back.

Contracts for ware potatoes are a joke. Years of oversupply qa gets tighter, pick off much higher and rejections Mord common. A 100 quid contract price is ok but if you get 25-30% pick off it really only giving you 70 quid ex farm. Costs £ 2500 an acre to grow them

This time next year potatoes will be worth a fortune!
That's what my mate reckons every bad year.
Too frightened of quitting and missing the bonanza, that never seems to appear.
Too many round here can remember '76
Point out it was over a third of a century ago.......
"Yeah but you never know";)
Makes my optimism for a profitable suckler operation seem sane!!!!
