You can always pay someone to print the cd off, or in the case of larger manuals, just print the relevant section off as you need it.
Cd manuals are no good whilst your delving in the guts of a machine, but cd is good way to keep the data

Always fancied one for MF 3000/3100. Genuine paper is £150+ so a cd for £2.88 seems excellent value or am I missing something?

Be careful with them, I bought one and the workshop manual in it was the earlier type that only covered the 16 and 32 speed AB models, no real mention of Dynashift. Operators Manual was correct though.

From the 4200 workshop manual. Is that the offending spring (part 18)?

The one I've been looking at covers the 3120 which was dynashift only so hope it will be ok

I see now. That doesn't look very handy to replace. You would think after massey knew about the spring issue they would fit a separate range lever to that bit or at least fit a side plate to the box so the spring could be replaced much easier rather than continuing production in the 4200 and 4300 series.

We had one of these apart this spring.
The selector rail shown on the pic supplied by Monty is bolted to the rear of the main box inside the range gearbox.
To get at it you have to split the tractor between the range-box and the rear-axle centre housing. Wheel the gearboxes out from under the cab still attached to the engine/front axle and then remove the range gearbox.
Under no circumstance split the tractor between the main and range boxes.
It's a lengthly procedure but within the capability of the DIY farm mechanic with a good strong splitting track and level floor.
Took us about a day and a half to get there and best part of two to put back, but the first time you do a major job like this is a learning curve.

your spot on there weve done quite a few over the years and thats the way we do it, take the cab floor out first then split at the back of the range box support the cab and remove its front mountings then wheel the lot out forwards

The mechanic has drained the oil out my MF 390 gearbox to split tractor ,and found "capsule shaped" bits of metal in the oil some crunched up. Any idea what the bits of metal could be?? The mechanic is going to ask a mate what he thinks the bits are as well, not good news I expect.
Tractor having thread title problem fixed at long last, but sounds to be more than the cursed spring.

We found some bits when draining for an oil change I think on the 690. That was about 20 years ago. Never done anything about it because we were moving to Wales so there was plenty other stuff happening. Still never done anything about it and it's still going fine

Any progress yet?

Now that MX7 has got the attention of all the 390 experts, can I please take advantage and pop in a quick question?

Some time ago, I started a thread about the transmission safety switch on a MF390T not working. In other words, it starts when the shuttle lever is in forward and sometimes in reverse when it should only start in neutral. I adjusted the linkages without success. The manual I have here says something tweaking rails in, I think, the gear box -- I mentally switched off at this point as that is outside my area of expertise! If you've got this far, you'll know what I mean! Is it worth doing, or do I just stay careful and never try to start the tractor from the ground (which I don't do anyway!)?

Get a mechanic to change the safety start switch, which was external on older models at least. Leave it at your own risk.

Definitely not a MF390 expert ...........
The transmission safety switch is under the floor, whip the mat out and take the centre panel off and you'll see it, I think?
Take a picture if you want and post it.
If the switch seems to be working as it should, I'd try WD40 into the switch to see if the switch is sticking

A new switch is not much more than a tenner and can be changed in a few minutes. That's on a non shuttle box. The shuttle one may be different.

That was the first thing I did. Then tweaked the linkages. I've posted about this before, though not about the rails. I even put some weld on the old switch to extend it's reach in case the contact inside the gear box was worn. No good.:(
