Big favour! I have found a couple of old photos and would love to know where the pictures were taken. I believe they are near Exeter, but that is because they are with others in Devon. The first is a village.

and the second is my Uncle and Aunt in the porch of the farmhouse. They lived somewhere near Exeter and I had some good times on the farm, but I cannot find where the farm is (or was). Anyone recognise the front of the house? Long shot, I know....
Thanks!

I'm near Exeter.

But does not ring any bells yet. Will look later on full size screen.

Is that a pub sign on the first picture? And a stream running across the front of the village square?

Thanks! I think it is a pub sign that looks a bit like a prancing horse, but I think the dark bit at the front is the shadow of the tree.
All I remember is being picked up from Exeter station (having travelled by myself age 10) and the road at some point was on the banks of the Exe. The farm was off a minor road and needed two gates opening on the lane down to the farm house. My uncle was called Jack Cutler and had a herd of jersey cows. The holidays there gave me my love of farming.

Just been and asked the name kind of rings a bell, but we still don't recognise the village.

Guessing you would of gone up the river, so could be heading Crediton, or Stoke Canon then Tiverton direction, I keep thinking Brampford Speke but don't think it's right.

Hope you find out cos now my grandparents are interested to find out!:LOL:

How close to Exeter do you think it was? Can you remember roughly how long the journey took from Exeter to the farm although at 10 I suppose even a small distance might seem like a long adventure. The black painted strip around the house I think of as typically Devon but doesn't help locate the place. The bow top porch I would think distinctive enough that if it is still there somebody would know it. Good luck in finding it.

We are on the exe estuary. To the west. Nothing near here that fits. Or the other side either.

Going back up the exe I do wonder about Bramford Speke??

Will check with parents. Dad been in Devon for 50 years. But mum born and breed here from farming background up on the edge of Dartmoor.

Uncle set up big vet practise nr Exeter so the name and cattle may help job some memories.

Thanks! I seem to recall a journey of around half an hour, but as you say, I was all exitement and big eyes! And to top off the thrill, they always had "travel sweets" and one of those boiled sugar hard sweets lasts about half an hour!

Not a lot of help but if TFF does not come up with the name (unlikely I know) the WMN may help by printing a letter. If they do, ask if they can print the letter on Weds or Sat. Lots of careful farmers only buy the paper on those two days:censored::whistle:. Weds for the farming and Sat for the death announcements.

I did wonder about that(y)

@Old Boar do you know when they left Devon, whether they were born in Devon or moved there to farm? I assume there were no offspring although Cutler seems a reasonably common name in East Devon/Dorset.

Another thought was were the Jerseys pedigree? Local retired auctioneer or feed rep may also know/remember

I did try by tweeting the pictures to Old pics of Exeter(or some such) name, but only received a curt reply back, of, 'No idea' would have expected them to be a little more helpful:(

Thanks for the ideas! Sorry to be thick but what is WMN?
Jack and Doris (known to the family as Griselda, and maybe outside the family!) moved to a farm in Lower Ashton around 1960 and had a milk round (I loved separating the cream with a hand crank thingy!). They then had a mink farm there for a few years and then a rabbit farm. We used to go to Brixham in a blue mini pickup to get tripe and fish guts for the mink and boil it up.
Doris was my fathers sister and born in London. I dont know where Jack came from but he had a Devon accent which I loved and tried to copy. Doris made pottery and sold it locally.
I dont know if the Jerseys were pedigree but I have a picture of a bulls head if that would help. I know the bull was a nasty piece of work and had Jack a couple of times.
I will have a go at making the pic bigger, I am very grateful for all your suggestions and help.

The pictures must have been taken after 1956 as we were in Kenya until then. I would say 1956/7
If it was not for my Uncle Jack I would never have bought a farm and would probably still be nursing. Once bitten by the farming bug...
