Yes he does!

Nice collection (y)

How do you like the hydraulic fwa?

My 4240 has the PFWD, it does some good but is in no way as good as MFWD, to test how well the system is working, place the range lever (A-D) in the towing position ( between C and D) and move the shuttle lever into forward or reverse, this will engage drive to PFWD and leave gearbox in neutral, it should move the tractor along, if not the system is either down on pressure or motors are getting worn

I would imagine they were quite impressive in 1973/4, whilst everyone else was tiddling about on Ford 4000/ MF 165 etc.

In our area 2 farmers bought 4020's in 1966 from Bromley's of Wellington ( company long gone) John Radcliffe sold them and some time later he worked in sales at F H Burgess Shrewsbury depot, he always smiled about these 2 4020's and said it was the worst day's work he ever did, both machines were still going strong and in regular use in the early 80's and had become somewhat of a legend in the locality.

Not only did he sell the tractors but 2 5 furrow F245H semi mounted conventional ploughs, 1 four furrow deep digger reversible plough, 2 16 ft C410 cultivators and 2 sets of trailed discs to go with these tractors.

At that time locally most were using Major's or 65's with one or 2 larger farmers round having 6x Fords and 100 series Massey's, the 4020's were like giants in comparison

Matt, next years Newport show is going to be a John Deere special in the vintage/classic tractor display, (this year was County) you are not that far away and your tractors would be most welcome and look very well in the line up and ring parade, I will keep in touch and let you know the telephone number to ring and enter one or all of them, please bring that superb looking 4230 if not all of them.

I will be taking this and maybe the S version if I complete the paint in time

When was the SG2 cab first introduced? In my ignorance I thought Ford had the first Q cabs in 1976.Obviously I'm wrong.

John Deere had a massive redesign and launched the SG in 1972 on the 30 series, quite a lot of the 30 series was similar to the 20's but the fitting of the cab needed a big redesign and a lot of tooling in the factory.
An instant success in America but slower to catch on over here, the Deere's most UK customers were buying were German models with a Duncan cab fitted for the UK market, there was an option of specifying an OPU cab from 1974 onwards on German 21/3130 models, these had a sliding rear window but later ones built during 1976 when Q cab became law had gas strut rear window.

I think the first UK manufacturer to fit a Q and get it launched was Massey in 1975 but may be wrong

Holton Tractor Parts, near Market Rasen, in Lincolnshire have a 40 series JD for sale cheap that has had a fire in the cab. It's either a 4240 or a 4440. Just needs a cab. They said there was no point breaking it as there are so few around now wanting parts. Could be of interest to you chaps.

Roy Stokes, have you got any more details on the special JD theme at the upcoming Newport Show in 2015, could be worth us flagging it up in Classic Tractor. We did cover the County theme in 2014.

If they want my 7710 there i'll bring it but maybe to new? Could also bring a model A 3 wheeler on the trailer behind 77, keep me posted

That would be great Rusty, I was told my 4240 would be too modern until I pointed out that it was 1978 and that a proportion of the County's last year were newer, I personally think that the 7710 should be included but space is sometimes a problem, I will let you know what he decides and contact numbers as I get them
