Import tax on precision farming equipment

Ah I see, not as simple as I thought! In that case I believe electronics only have the import vat on them, which can be claimed back, and not the duty which can't. It may vary depending on where it is imported from, but I was going to import from the USA.
I'm not saying I think everyone should import gps equipment rather than supporting UK suppliers, but I'm just trying to understand about the import taxes in general, as I know some of them can be claimed back.

2.3 Who can reclaim import VAT as input tax?
Subject to the normal rules, you can claim as input tax any import VAT you pay on goods, provided those goods are imported for the purpose of your business. Your claim must normally be made on the VAT return for the accounting period during which the importation took place.

The normal evidence of payment of import VAT is the import VAT certificate (form C79), which is issued monthly. Section 8 gives more information about the C79, as well as the acceptable evidence for those types of importation that at present do not appear on a C79. It also explains what to do if you lose a certificate or have any queries about items missing from certificates.

If you are partly exempt and are unsure about the amount of tax that you may reclaim, you should consult our Helpline, telephone: 0300 200 3700.

I now feel bad for being a bit sarky to you, I'm very sorry, my misunderstanding!!
I didn't realise Patchwork were British made products
No harm done. I took it in the spirit in which is was meant so no malice.

Yes, not only is Patchwork a UK company, based in Wales but all products are designed, software coded and assembled, packed and shipped, telephone supported and backed -up along with regular, free updates, entirely in Wales.

I have just looked it up. Import VAT is paid at the same rate as VAT in this country. It is paid direct to HMRC rather than the goods supplier. It can be claimed back by VAT registered companies. Import Duty, however, is a tax on certain goods brought in from countries outside the EU. It is not reclaim able. It also varies in rate depending on the goods. VAT is also payable on the import duty tax !
Correct , you see the point is if it's coming in from the EU or not. As EU purchases aren't classed as imports whereas non EU purchases are and as such subject to import duty. But as stated EU purchases are just subject to VAT at usual rate.

Hi a Leica unit uses a different radio modem in the US as it uses a different frequency, the two items have different part numbers but I believe that it is one part of the kit which is different.
However support would be the main issue.
