Am baulking at the the price of Hy-gard as its time for a new barrel. I understand the importance of proper oil and in the case of our 2 CVT tractors, don't want to take any risks but is there a different product with the same characteristics and genuine manufacturer assurances, without the expensive green and yellow paint on the drum? Thanks

Deutz back end oil is the same stuff. I was putting hygard in mine (agrotrons) because the jd stealer is closest.

Bought a barrel of Deutz just before lambing. £380 (plus an hour's drive to get it)

What JD spec has it got to meet ?(should say on your old barrel) usually J 20 A&C or J20 B&D, or am I being presumptious, and you`re actually not putting it in a JD.

we use witham oils wbto in back end of tractors , never had problems ,speak to your oil company

auto power has 10041 hours on not had any problems ,and other tractors up to 14000 hours on witham oils ,
jd mf case nh all buy oils from different blenders like witham or morris etc ,as long its up to spec makes no odds whats printed on drums

fer the luv of god when will folks learn tractor makers dont make oil they farm it out to all the oil manufacturers then go with cheapest deal and stick a jd badge or fergie badge on drum.tis the spec that counts not some stupid name like hy gard.

allways used suto int backend of our deeres.

can someone explain what hyguard does differently to a universal? is it more for the uptodate machines that perhaps pump oil differently to anything else, and what happens when it gets mixed through contamination from other implements with oil in them?

We get our oil from our fuel supplier. They either send Gulf or Shell. I might be wrong, but I think GL-4 is the equivalent grade too HY-Guard.
I cannot remember the exact price off the top of my head, but I think that it was in the £300's. Definitely not the £600's. They are having a laugh.

I was quoted three years ago three hundred quid for a forty five gallon of hygard, and things oil wise are not that much more expensive today- someone is pulling your plonker somewhere. There was only a tenner difference between hy gard and my local oil supplier at the time.

John Deere Hygard is made by Shell and their equivalent is Shell Spirax S4 TXM.
Hygard can be bought for £455 per barrel with a free box of JG grease from my local JD dealer.

Shop around and buy the correct oil, I think it is JD20C spec. I would not use a universal oil.

For decent stuff I'm not too sure. I recently bought a barrel of Shell Rimula RT4L for £400, the JD Plus 50 11 was £430; these are similar specs and I reckon they are the same.
The UTTO oils are usually a little dearer, so £455 for Hygard doesn't seem too bad, I do not know how much the Shell Spirax S4 TXM is.

Why have Shell renamed their oils to such silly names? The red grease I use is now Gadus S2V220AC2, what a mouthful and not too easy to remember. (Don't ask why I like red grease, I just do!)
