Kindle reader

My i-pad , that has my kindle reader app on it ,is getting a bit long in the tooth . I don't want to change the i pad , and I was looking at a new Kindle reader . They look very expensive to me . question should I buy a cheaper tablet or similar , and put a Kindle app on it , or should I just swallow the price and buy a proper Kindle reader . I'm pretty well incapacitated , and read a lot and the money isn't a problem . (I think I'm just becoming an old tight-arse ! ) Opinions ?

I have been reading ebooks since 2005 or thereabouts. Started off on various Palm phones, then moved to Android when I started using a Kindle app, as well as an alternative eReader app.

I still use both on phone and tablet, and even on my laptop. I would justify a Kindle itself, BUT, I always have a phone or tablet nearby, and you can always reduce glare and colour of the screen. Tomorrow, I will be on the train to the NEC for 60mins, so phone and a book it is...

I would think that the OP, @Av Gorritt should pick up an ebay Kindle and see if it suits?

Yes , I had a proper Kindle reader some time back , and I gave it to the great grandchildren , so I'm not completely unfamiliar with one . Amazon have just done their usual "We thought you might like this" and that was a refurb one . I'm not overly sure I'd like that after some of the "Guaranteed re worked "items that I've had . I think I'll just wait until Black Friday and buy the new "works"-- cover and charger included - I'd need them anyway .

Got the new Kindle reader today . quite surprised really , I'd imagined one similar in size to an i pad . All I have to do now is set it up , and then take it from there . It's certainly very "slip it in your pocket " portable . The bits come separately apparently ! It all looks OK so far though

Do the "Kindle "reader owners subscribe to the "Kindle unlimited " thread - £9 odd a month i think - If not , where to access reading matter please ?
I have tried it once or twice for the "free first month", but cancel before the end... And I am a big reader.

I found the books I was interested in was actually quite limited. Access to magazines and the like, might be more appealing, but I am not a fan of digital magazines.

Borrowbox through your local library free to use

BB does not work with my local library, I have to use Libby, which is fine, good for audiobooks too in the tractor!! ;)

I have wondered about signing up for "another" library to get more ebooks available.

It has to be said, you seem to be very tech savvy for your age. Without making you feel old or anything, my grandpa is 15 years younger, refuses to carry a mobile phone and has never used the internet!

I used to access a site with loadsa free books , Australian based I think , and I've quite forgotten the name of it now (old age'n all that ) I got a whole lot of reading from that one , right enough one had to sift through a lot of uninteresting stuff , but the good stuff was there too . I downloaded the full Damon Runyan omnibus from there . No doubt I'll think of it shortly - I usually do ! Or , of course the much valued FF community will come to the rescue with the name !

I bought a hooky DVD with literally thousands of ebooks on it some years ago. Dumped the lot onto the hard drive and have "donated" the odd copy to friends and family.

I actually wanted it originally for the complete Terry Pratchett collection which I have in paperback, but wanted ebooks for the phone.
