Tractor flotation Tyres

Can get a set of flotation Tyres at handy money for my tractor, was thinking it would be good for the umbilical work and also re-seeding work. My question is.... On the umbilical would I struggle for grip as the weight is obviously spread over a bigger area? Would I be better going for duels all round?

Don't do contracting so not much of a worry, 11ft wide I think, most gateways are 12ft I think, and if they aren't they soon will be [emoji23]

What tyres are you thinking of? Russian type tyres, such as 28.1x26 tanker tyres, give very little grip. Terra tyres don't give a lot of grip either and you'll be relying on your front tyres to pull you through on umbilical work. Couple of contractors running 1050/50r32 round here, widest I've run on were 800/65r32. 800s were good compromise between flotation, grip and overall width. Even used them to bale in wet years

Yeah that's what I though too wide and it would be just like a boat with no grip![emoji1]

Might try duels all round if I can find some.
The tractors got 18.4 r38's on at the moment, I've put 16.9 r38 duels on but it's not helped that much as the side walls must be smaller on 16.9's? as there's a couple or 3 inches gap. It stops the 18.4's going in to far though if there is a wet bit!

18.4s are a difficult size to match up to. I can't think of anything that grips well that you could replace them with. Duals or replacing your 18.4s with 600/65r38 would be the cheapest option. Anything else is going to need the fronts changed as well.

Did a lot of umbilical slurry with a NH7840 on Russian floatations on the back only, normal tyres on the front, they were really great for crossing wet ground, tractor coped on the splash plate fine, good going across steep ground but going straight up or down hopeless for grip, spread fields close to deep wooded ravines and you just kept well clear, the boss managed to put the tractor in to a ravine once, just no grip on that day. But, as I said, you could cross wet ground reeling in and out that you sank in up your wellies no problem.

I'd quite happily change the fronts as well. It's a spare tractor anyway so would leave the big wheels on semi permanently I think.

Just the job! maybe 800's would give a gd happy medium ground pressure for grip and float? It's a valtra 8050 with 38 rears 28 inch rims on the front so with 32 rears I'd need 22inch fronts?

so nothing replaces 18.4 r38 directly for floatations, does that main u would have to step down to 13.6 r28 fronts?

what replaces 20.8?

know nothing about it incase u wondering for questions

I have replaced 520/70r38 (same height as 18.4R38) with goodyear STR 30.5R32. When I bought them I figured I should change the fronts as well (480/70R24) but they match up very well. Crap tyre on the road but loads of grip. They are old tyres but quite cheap, they come up regularly.
On another note, you could go for 650/60R38 (again same height as 18.4r38) michelin xeobibs but they will set you back financially.
If you go 800/65R32 on the rear you will need 540/65R28 on the front most likely, I take it you have 16.9R28 now?
wdah/him: 20.8R38 is same height as 650/65R38 which in turn is the same height as a 800/65R32.

So ure saying 18.4r38 have a 70 sidewall and a 16.9 has a 65 sidewall?

The fronts are 14.9r28 I think.
Yeah I've a set of those 30.5 r32's on a tanker.

I have a valtra T183 on 650 r42 540 r30's plan was to use it on the umbilical but it's a heavy big tractor, I use it with the trailing shoe when conditions are good but we spread a lot in February/March with the splash plate when we can so I use the fairly light in comparison 8050 valtra then, so I'd like to set it up with good Tyres for the job and maybe fit front links some day [emoji120][emoji1]

If you are currently on 18.4x38 and 14.9x28 and you want to put 800/65r32 on the back you need 16.9x28 or equivalent on the front. 540/65r28 would be ideal or 480/70r28 would be a cheaper option.
