Do not forget the photo licence must be renewed every ten years.
Apparently no reminder but hefty fine if not done
Plus you would be driving with no licence and can be done twice

Can someone provide a link to a page showing the requirement to change? I can find nothing even on the governments own websites. I think it's a case of another policeman not knowing anything about what he is talking about myself.

Did find one that said they have to be replaced but then it went on to say the reduction in red tape was going to stop that from happening , so like most government stuff no one knows what the f is going o . Guess only way is to get hold of dvla. My licence says its valid untill 2030 doesnt say it needs to be renewed so cant see how they can legally make us change

I found plenty of forums gassing about it, and one or two mentions on the mail and telegraph websites but nothing that would make me go and do it.

In fact the governments website says you need a valid passport to do it, so they will struggle here then as I have let my passport lapse for several years now.

Thats to do it online as they use that photo but has to be less the five years old ( the passport)

I went into the DVLA office to get my paper licence up graded. I was the only person there, apart from the clerk behind the counter, but he wouldn't serve me until I'd got a ticket from their machine!

Then they refused my application for a photo driving licence at 70 for some stupid reason. I think the background to the photo wasn't white enough for them or something. So I sorted that and applied again and was rejected again for something they'd accepted the first time. So I threw it back in the draw and forgot about it. Next time I looked I saw I'd been driving around for two years without a licence....

Everything is perfectly legal so long as you don't get caught!:D

At the least a tractor driving licence class F and be over 17 to drive all vehicles but 16 with an F can drive qualifying vehicles up to 24 tonnes gross

You can't drive a qualifying vehicle up to 24 tonnes gross on a Cat. F licence at 16 because it has to be either a single axle trailer or a tandem axle trailer that is close coupled and less than 2.45m wide.
Close coupled means Ifor Williams type size of tyres, you're not going to get 18.290 tonnes ( max weight of trailer) on a single axled or Ifor type trailer.
PS this isn't a challange!!

Most rubber tracked vehicles require a class H which needs to be 21 years old

The big question mark is quad tracks, some argue that they can be driven on a class F , I personally think it would not stand up and would definitely prefer to see Class H drivers on them,
It has never been tested in court

I believe track layers can be driven on a class F if they are classed as agricultural tractors or more precisely an AMV (agricultural motor vehicle)

Close coupled refers to the axle configuration, not the size of the trailer. It means you can't tow semi coupled configurations (artic trailers on dollys) at 16. Also 2.45m refers also to the width of the tractor also, not just the trailer.

So perfectly capable of driving a 24.5 ton vehicle at 16 ...... But can't drive a smart car  (n)

I wouldn't have changed but when I renewed the truck insurance they wanted a copy of my driving license , sent photocopy of the paper license but they wouldn't accept it, insisted on photo .

Track layers certainly cannot be driven on class F
They can be driven on Class B but you should have L plates and you must be over 21 unless it weighs less the 3.5 tonnes
I would advise anyone to take class H if driving them
The exemption as some believe for quad tracks is based around half tracks for which you certainly can drive with either class F or C if agricultural, but would need HGV for many.
Nobody could claim a quad track is a half track

Not having L plates though if you have a category B license is hardly a hanging offence though, and your insurance does cover, but do not forget the age bit.

I think there is something that the close coupled axle must not be more than 1m apart at the wheel centre, which would rule out most trailers, I used to worry a bot when my 16 year olds were carrying 17 bales back on the road, they re both on full licences now(y)

Certainly agree with you on the Quad Trac thing. The rules note that it only covers half tracks but can you not drive a track layer that is an agricultural tractor on a Cat. F at age 17 provided that it does not weigh more than 3,500kg and is less than 2.45m wide? Which obviously rules out Challengers, Quad Tracs etc.
