Which growth reg are you using on w.barley?

I don't put any growth regulator on my WBs because I want nice soft straw and if it is laid you can pick up barley easily with the combine. Last year my Glacier did 3.9 tonnes/acre which is 9.64 tonnes/ha for you Remain chaps.

@Jetemp I used modus last year at 0.150, don't know why we used Freeze this year? May be cheaper? I haven't had the invoice. Always do three PGR's here as it would be flat as a pancake on this black fen. always use Terpal last. I Think our three year average is 4t acre with Tower and Cassia.

@Sonoftheheir the only reason I asked was because we got sent freeze instead of moddus last year, there wasn't a big enough saving for me, not enough to move away from a tried and tested product that has proven itself over years!

If it had of been 2/3 price I might look at it differently but not for pennies saving an acre

It must be a regional thing, I always use cerone but you southerners seem to prefer terpal, any diff. In performance?

I'll have a look at product labels tomorrow. If they have the same effect or cut off timing then I can't answer why I've used Terpal instead

It looks as though it does the same thing at roughly the same rates, unsurprisingly, but for some reason it's not listed in the guide prices from my buying group. Serviced product only?

I'll make some enquiries.

Am I the only WB grower who doesn't use growth regulator?
No your not we don't either, although we have used 1.25 lt/ha ccc this year on the advise Of my agro because of the wet winter he was concerned about shallow rooting, crops being a bit thin and not being able to roll them this spring. I definitely wouldn't use terpal late on because I think it knocks the carp out of the crop.

Absolutely no problem with terpal here. Just as first awns appear but before grain sites show. Have done split fields and never seen any yield effect from terpal but does reduce lodging and brackling.

Sorry everyone, I started this thread then was away from Internet for a day or so.

Obviously different crops have differing lodging risk.

Just find it interesting that people (including myself - or my agronomist) seem to probably have a standard approach from one year to the next??

But, the usual programme on one farm can be quite different to another's.

I guess there's more than one way to skin a cat.

I take @Brisel 's point of ask your agronomist, he's the guy inspecting the crop and obviously the person to ask why that approach.

It has been good, however, to hear other people's strategies. Now I've got more of an idea what other people do.

Never been unhappy with what we've done in the past, but always looking to see if another approach could give the same result for less cost.

Since I've done the spraying, always done the programme as per my opening post. Should have missed a patch as a trial - will do next year.

I note a couple of people use no growth reg. We normally use 170kg N. This year closer to 190 as thought crop not as lush as normal.

Did 0.25 cerone last year in spring barley just in the really good patches. Came dry afterwards and could see to the inch where I'd turned sprayer on and off. Will cut it down to 0.2 (or less) this year if any spring barley to do.

@Qman I presume that you had the exceptional yields that most experienced last year, do you think this wil have effected the amount of residual nitrogen in the soil? Have you will you take this into consideration this year?

No I haven't but perhaps I should. I put the final N on my wheat 2 days ago and they are not growing well. the firsts got 155 units and the 2nds got 165units (193kg/ha and 206kg/ha)
