i can get malt pellets £140.....i could grow oats next year? would that be better than barley?.....surely not enough protein?

Yea but oats will not have enough protein or energy by themselves unless you are only feeding ewes with singles.

Aye but you don't lamb until spring, if your lambing in Dec/ Jan etc then they will need a decent ration of else you will be making problems for the sake of it.
