I'd think an article on the work of TB turbos in the 1980's through to their demise in the early 2000's would make for interesting reading. Back in the day almost everyone's front line machines had been converted around here in the north.

That's a good one. Shame they didn't move with the times into electronic tuning, they had a great name behind them.

I've got a video of a 390 with a TB turbo fitted forage harvesting in the dark with a Taarup 106b, with the whole manifold and turbo glowing.

Dad always bought a 390, bolted a TB on and fiddled with the pump rather than buy a 390t, as the 390 had a bigger block than the 390t.

Did the 4000 pee all over the 990? Either of them would easily pee over the other depending on curmistances

No, the day started with the 4000 being towed off by the 990 because the ford had wound its battery flat and the can of ether was empty

after that, the Ford was on a 2f TS59 ransomes, the 990 had a 3f IH B13. The heavier 990 on smaller wheels was getting on much better with the bigger plough, aided by a depth control system designed to work with depth wheeled implements

the 4000 spent most of the day spinning helplessly and lurching forwards as the draft control cut in and out

Its a sight that i still remember vividly, 20 years on. Not to mention the sound

Neither would I or a 6420s(y)
Wonder where Deere got the 100hp ish 4 cylinder turbo idea from

wonder where the man at ford got it from.....didnt some of the factory lads rob some coinage out of the christmas party box to buy a turbo and bolted it to a 5000 lump to prove it could be done

Besides the fact that way back in 1961/2, while ford were still churning out old majors, an enterprising chap called Bert Ashfield had fitted one of the very first prototype CAV turbos to the engine in a 990 implematic, pushing its output to 70hp at 2000rpm

Given the small bore long stroke of the 990 as a linered block, it was logical that the later incarnations would have produced more hp, the first turbocharged 4/55 engine, fitted to an experimental 1200 tractor, in 1967 was edging on 90hp

i think that answers your question.

So why did the 7000s take off then, and DBs 1410,and 1412 always blow up having done not many hours?

14s always blew for one single reason, the injection pump.

The CAV inline pump was unable to adjust its timing "on the fly"...it had a fixed injection, regardless of engine revs. This created stress at higher revs, and with a manufacturing fault in the cranks (2 suppliers, one was ok, one wasnt)...they did break

1490/94 had the very same engine, but with a CAV rotary pump, with automatic timing advance retard, so the timing advanced at higher revs. They didnt suffer the same crank issues, yet were identical internal design...the advanced timing caused less stress and made the engine burn cooler
