Mustard seed for BCN control

hey all,

Where is the best place to get mustard seed for BCN control?

Last time I had some it was £3kg (2013 I think) where is the price now?

Would it be any cheaper buying it now? And is it hard to get hold of, as more people seem to use it now?
Thanks,

Gary

I paid £1.20/kg for "normal" mustard seed in August. Do you need anything special for a BCN trap crop? I thought brassicas were a host for BCN :scratchhead:

Do we need special varieties for bcn, I've got some bcn radish and other than the price it looks like any other radish.

Am I right in thinking a radish/mustard cover crop is a false host crop whereby it works by fooling the nimatode into completing it's life cycle then because it's not a host crop the baby nimatode starve to death.

How would a special mustard/radish do this and a normal (cheap) one not?

There are two different approaches. Normal mustard just relies on a catch effect getting the nematode to hatch then destroying the catch crop before the bcn has completed its life cycle.
Other fumigant mustards produce higher quantities of HCN (cyanide) as they break down and therefore once ploughed in they fumigate the soil killing bcn. Don't ask me which varieties produce the higher HCN!

Dear Gary,

I had a storage tenant who was trying to break into this market but basically failed and went bust leaving me with a fair amount of seed. Brown mustards are the 'hot ones' - particularly suitable for the PCN control, the Vegegard or Rootgard would therefore be what you want. If you are at all keen i'll do an up to date germination test and could send you e.g. a KG for your own tests if required. Its all untreated seed so keeps well. Price ex farm for sensible quantities (500 kg) would be today's open market equivalent divided by 2 multiplied by the germination rate. e.g. £3.00 / 2 = £1.50 x 72% = £1.08 per kg.

Look forward to hearing,

Regards

Thanks very much Robert, I'll have to look at this properly this evening. I'm confusing myself ATM!
We had some homegrown mustard seed that was just left in a bin for over 5 years and that grew on. A germination test would be handy once we know what sort I need.

Then perhaps a mix of mustard's & oilseed radish?

We used oilseed radish for a couple of years for PCN, we never had a slug problem until after this. We've used mustard for over 25 years without any noticeable difference in slug numbers. It may just be a coincidence? We also started growing winter barley around the same time, we also had the very wet year of 2012.

@Robert (Andrew) Could you do a germination test on your root guard seed please? That one seems to be the one for BCN -

RootGuard
The RootGuard blend is formulated to produce required levels of allyl isothiocyanates in the plant and root biomass at concentrations that suited to controlling soil-borne diseases affecting sugarbeet and other root crops. In addition, RootGuard will help inhibit invasive weed growth.
