They've just rang to say they are coming to inspect. What do I need to have in place? We are in a NVZ and don't use any muck. Advice welcome please.

We've had one and they were interested in the waste exemptions which we held, that fuel and liquid fert stores were bunded and also make sure you've an emergency action plan with drains and watercourses marked near the yard.

Had one in November. Went through nvz records with a fine tooth comb but I do have muck coming out of my ears. Wanted to see n max figures, fertiliser plan. Yields used for calculation of n applied. Also checked spray records and looked in the store. Wanted a plan of where the yard drains went but that was more to do with my silage effluent.

They did send an email letter saying what they wanted to see.

How much warning have you had timewise?
I was given next day notification on an NVZ check, N max was up to date so no problem.
I thought red tape was supposedly reducing!

This, and add spray store bunding, spill kits etc. Do check your waste exemptions e.g. using building waste for farm tracks, burning grain store tailings etc haven't expired. Nitrogen plan & NMax should be straight forward.

Liquid fertiliser stroes don't have to be bunded but you ought to have an emergency plan that would deal with the contrents of a leaking/damaged tank.

I actually didn't do my waste exemptions. Only because they had recently expired and I have never been sure which I need. I asked the EA inspector what I should be doing. She was very helpful and put me on the right track. Apparently it is one of the most asked about pieces of legislation. It confuses everybody.

I'm surprised they wanted to see Nmax figures. They're mentioned a lot in the NVZ regs but the actual rule is that you're not allowed to exceed them, not that you have to do the calculation. If you're sure you're ok I'd just give the data to any inspector that asks for them and let them do the working out!!

The letter I was sent asked for all nvz records. My n max was all up together so it was one thing I wasn't concerned about. The inspector asked to see the full records of 5 fields including the n max calc. She didn't question my calculation just wanted to see if had done it. I got the impression they often have to do some working out of these figures when they inspect farms.
