Well at least someone's got a decent tractor.:woot:

Seriously though....with the state of UK ag at present, is buying ever more expensive kit, and charging higher, and higher rates to cover it viable in the long term ?
Will it get to the stage where hedges go uncut, rather than pay £40 / hour ?

The only way to put a lid on not charging anymore is makers need to cut there cloth a bit..
Like thats going to happen anytime soon.
It ultimately starts with the NEW price of everything.

The biggest killer is usually VAT when working for non VAT registered customers, £35hr + VAT is £42 an hour and then it's getting pricey...
I find that my non VAT registered customers think that hedgebrushing in the high fortys inc vat, they think that is cheap as they have to pay more than that per hr for other people to do the same job with hand tools and take longer.
They can't get over that the cost is so low for a big tractor/brusher outfit.

No, because then along comes someone like me, with a machine what owes me nothing and can do as good a job as a new one, albeit slightly slower, because its maintained in tip top condition, and il charge 35 quid

ive made a good days pay, the customer gets his hedge cut cheaper than the flash jack down the road whos still working to make his finance payment

every ones a winner...

except Jack, who should have known better.

Yes the price may be a little more but it is the out put of machine that have gone up a lot & this is they one way you can keep the price in check

When you get to a job and your faced with about 6 seperate acre sizes paddacks, all seperated by fencing, with hedges round the perimeter and through the middle....35 isnt really enough given the ball ache you have shunting round trees, gates, posts, feeders, water tanks and the like

it also makes having a fashionable 200hp tractor and an equally large trimmer completely impractical

the drainage board contract which also makes use of the mower is 35 quid an hour,,,thats the price they set as fair, so its the price i use whenever i start the trimmer up

OMG

Who do you insure with?
18 was just man and tractor

il come cut your hedges for 35 quid an hour, same as im cutting everyone elses

£18/Hr for man and tractor and £17/Hr for the trimmer on top ? (n)

Doesn't make much sense. If you're so smart that you can charge a tractor out at £18/Hr you need to look at your hedgetrimmer. I reckon you could reduce costs if you ran a Teagle Silver Bullet. Would match an old DB/case really well :LOL:

If you're charging by the hour what difference does it make how difficult the job is?

18/hr was rate set by the bloke i was working for...it wasnt great, but it was enough considering i didnt have to rush about, i could have took 12 and drove thier tractor. That would leave mine stood doing nothing, so thought may as well take the extra 6 quid and have something what i like driving, as opposed to a NH T7

However, given that the drainage board contract is increaseing in size this year, i wont need to worry about it, as the 4/5 weeks the tractor was pulling a trailer for 18 quid, will now be given up and it will simply stay on the hedger cutting ditches for double the amount

Smart is the key word here , or lack of smart is a bigger word here , to pick 18/ hr with your own tractor over 12 just to sit on somebody else's new tractor , says a lot about how somebody's computer works .

Personal preference...im quite happy to trundle along at 30k and enjoy my day

as opposed to the other lad who ended up with the NH, we ran 3 tractors between 2 people,

thus....the NH gets in the yard, my tractor is on the hopper being unloaded. The JD and trailer is already unloaded, having been before the DB. The NH driver then has to drop his tractor and trailer, get on the JD and take that for another load, when he gets back, il have finished unloading and put his tractor on the hopper for him.

when he gets back with the JD, the NH is unloaded so he has to take that back

i get to the yard, wait for the JD to unload, put my load on, oil the grader, clear some soil, fetch some boxes and sort any other jobs...

he was being paid £10/hr, i was being paid £12...and more fool him for rushing round like a tw*t i say

and before anyone says, no, its not my job to take either the NH or the JD if its sat empty, i have my tractor and i stay on it.

a bit like i charged someone 14 quid an hour to drive thier valtra, as i didnt like driving it, nor did anybody else for that matter

put me on a JD or MF and im happy with 12

The problem is people like you tell the OP to go out and work for £15 per with his tractor and he can never make a living at that rate, would not be so bad if you told him the right facts but all you are doing is filling there head full of hot air,you should show us all how well you have done from your Ford 5610 to a what. Now ?
So... you're just some white knight, riding in to protect a young startup?

What if he was going in to selling genuine AGCO oil filters? What would you advice be then?

In other news, today's TFF word of the day is hypocrisy.

No if the OP was local I would give him a job for the summer at more than your £15 per hour with there tractor
On you second do as good a deal as you can for your customers , what is wrong with that ?

I can do just as much and more than someone with my large framed 130hp tractor and 6m trimmer than someone with a 2wd Massey 390 and 5m trimmer, including 8ft wide lanes, sure I'm rubbing both sides but I'm still cutting.

The bashing of big tractors and kit on finance is getting boring. Some like to trundle along nice and steady on the old school toys, that's fine. Chap I know well into his 60's has not long bought a brand new JCB Fastrac and a tri-axle 22ton AW trailer and absolutely loves nothing more than going flat out everywhere.
