Apart from the 50p commission, surely the costs would have to be the same? AHDB, MLC etc are standard costs?

Small minor problem with Honiton....... do you realise how far it is from minehead :facepalm::LOL:

AHDB/ MLC should be the same but the rest they might ( and sounds like ) they charge more!

Lol you cannot refuse to venture out of Somerset for the rest of your days:ROFLMAO:

But joking aside EF shouldn't really be charging anymore ( give or take 5p/head ) than Honiton

Someone said Dunbia are cutting up New Zealand lamb at the moment why do farmers take lambs there though the year they should make them come to market and bid for them and why has the Welsh government given Dunbia so much funding not really helping the uk farmers cutting up New Zealand lamb

It's been gradually creeping up on us over the last few years. First washing out charge, then debt insurance, etc, etc. That, coupled with another bit of an issue means it may soon be time for a change.

Might even have to go back to them 'Little Red Tractors' like @neilo :inpain::inpain:

Key question for you is: If you go deadweight will you make more on average than if you sell liveweight?? answer that then work out where to go but imo you should draw 30 lambs out a week for 2/3 weeks/ split them up so they are a average weight/grade them send 15 liveweight and 15 deadweight each week and see which gives the best return..

Down here deadweight is around £5 head more on average than liveweight.. ( but if you have mostly U or even better E grade lambs that figure will be even higher )

£2.40 a lamb deadweight (includes belly clipping)

Think live is about £4.80 - £5 all in.

I noticed recently that commission rates for ewes was dearer. Lambs at 4.1% (so are store cattle) but ewes at 6!

Auctioneers are missing a trick here. If they matched there charges with the cost of sending dead, then surely they would draw more stock thus drawing more buyers. Just a thought.
As for DW charges that is a pee take. Why can't it just be worked in to the ppkg that they quote. Would possibly give a true reflection in value.

My bad- I included vat,

Net figure £3.38 per lamb, same whether they go dunbia or jaspers

No transport listed but I assume it's in there somewhere

If collection centre is £2.30 plus transport

Plus the cost and time of me driving 4 x as far as local market, I'm not seeing a huge difference.

You trying to do tread on my toes and take over the market reports :sneaky::ROFLMAO:

Sedge, 7/1/16

Wow what a store cattle and store lamb trade for the first market in 2017......

Store cattle,

A tight entry of only 380 cattle with some exceptional runs of well bred cattle sold to a Blistering trade, many many purchasers went home empty handed and trade was easily UP £100/150 head on pre xmas markets, prices of note were some superbly well bred/ farmed suckler Char steers making between £1400 and £1440 head which is both far higher than their value on the hook and more importantly the highest store cattle price at sedgemoor for 12 months at least and defo since the new weight limits came in! also price of note was a Fri steer at £1000 head, many many pens of feeding steers at £1100 head and many many pens of feeding heifers just shy of a £1000 head, interestingly many small fat and older cattle were making £1000 head + and these cattle were making far more than what they are worth on the hook..

Numbers will be short for Jan and trade is red hot, get those feeding cattle/ fat cattle TB tested and get them thru the ring and make the most of this red hot trade and don't forget by putting your fat cattle thru the store ring you will avoid paying that pesky AHDB tax ( sorry levy )..

Stirks, a super entry of mixed sorts, all cattle were well up on pre xmas levels and trade got dearer as the day went on, price of note are some super suckler Bred char steers at £895 head and some useful BBx steers which were small but super conformation at £700 head, also a superb Lim bull at 10 months old that is suitable for breeding made an impressive £995..

Calves, a useful entry of nearly 500 head sold to a mixed trade, 2nd grade and poorer calves sold to a stand on trade as previous weeks, strong BBX bulls would be anywhere from £260/ 330 head, Fri calves were in strong demand and a super BF calve made £161, reared Fri calves were also badly sought and plenty up/ down of £200 head..

Store lambs, WOW what a TRADE, some super runs of lambs in the market sold around £5 less than they will be worth on the hook if they were fit today ( on last weeks prices ) and if the fat price drops like expected net week then many lambs around the £63/65 mark will be only worth this amount on the hook at best, all in all trade would easily be up £5 head on pre xmas levels and many vendors were saying that it was the dearest trade of the store lamb season to date..

Sell live to thrive.
I thought the stirk trade got dearer as the sale went on,no doubt they are more expensive than 2 months ago,but considering the fat cattle trade at the moment I have seen stirks more expensive in comparison than they were yesterday.I bought those nice BBx cross steers, very pleased with them. I would normally be buying before xmas but been held up with TB restrictions.

no defo £3,20 they are fit but not very big 20 month old am weighing after lunch non f/a what other options ? apart from buying a butchers shop
Its not enough, but not so far out, they would probably grade 0+,so worth £3.40 at Dunbia/St Merryn, but with less deductions and maybe a bit more weight to sell per animal,if you can get another 20p you are doing fine.

It doesn't sound a very fair price to me given that supermarket spec cattle are on 3.50 this week. Depends on the weights I suppose but surely better off in the live ring.
Leek my only option really, what k/o percent would you expect or in other words how much live weight p kg with commission would = £3,20 dead with no deductions
