956XL Rear axle seal

Hi there,

Was using my 956 today and I noticed the smell of gear oil. Climbed out to have a look and found the rear rim covered in oil. The axle seal has obviously gone but what looks to be a steel ring on around the axle end is also torn and pushed outwards.

Is it just the seal gone or has something internal tried escaping? Seems pretty tough metal for that to happen to.

Guess I have to remove the trumpet housing and dismantle the final drive to get to the seal so I will probably find out on the way. Just dreading having it apart!

Just wondered if anyone has had similar happen as there hadn't been a hint of oil around it before.

It's simple enough.
Trumpet off and I think there's a big nut that holds the half shaft in. Everything slides out once it's off.
As you say the steel ring coming out will be self explanatory once you're in.

I would hazard a guess that the bearing has collapsed? Best to strip it now no big deal to do really, check the brakes when you are at it (both sides as 1 side wears more than the other and I can,t remember which side) as you have the oil drained and jacked up anyway.

Aye trumpet housing off, there is an awkward circlip holds the half shafts in, there is a special tool ( fancy circlip pliers ) for removing the clip.
But it can be picked out with screwdrivers, then off with the epicyclic unit & beat out the half shaft.
Cut the outer bearing off & you then access the seal.
Clean up the seal runner area on the shaft, pop the new seal on, warm the new bearing in a bearing oven ( yeah right, we all have bearing ovens or induction heaters lol ) but anyway warm up the bearing & fit.
Drop half shaft into housing, the hub pushes the seal into place, you'll see what I mean when doing the job & then back together after cleaning off old gasket sealer & applying new.

Good timing! We've got a 2wd 956xl with a leaky axle seal standing about. Do the trumpets have gear oil in or hytran running in from the backend?

Can the seals be replaced without the bearing or perhaps its either not worth the hassle or risk and just do the bearing anyway?

Thanks chaps.

Lol I've got the 856xl to do too. It's gear oil AFAIK, the hydraulic system is separate.

Gear oil, the rear axles are separate from the main transmission, back to back oil seals.

Not bad to get this far, the half shaft is reluctant, but after lunch I'll get it moved I'm sure.

If you already know please just ignore me......
You do need to take off that ring gear to re seal it prior to reassembly.
Off the trumpet? It came off the tractor easy. There's no gasket there, is it just squirty gasket used to seal it?
Just looking to get new bearings and seal now.
