Fuel for a ted20

The reduction box probably doubles the value of the tractor! A comp, ete reduction box on eBay usually gets into a 4 figure sum.

Well worth getting it sorted to run the bench on kero

having run many tvo tractors over the years, Case, International, Fordson ,and a Fergy powered 701 baler, I can say that they all ran with no bother at all on straight 28sec heating oil. The two model "N"s on the farm still do in fact. How ever, as the T20 engine was a poor conversion, they can be trouble in tractors. An Uncle had one from new, and it never ran well unless it was worked at almost stalling point, half an hours light work, and it would cool down and oil the plugs! Not good when you were filling the spreader by hand, you usually got back on the tractor to drive off, and make about 5 yards before it ran out of functioning plugs!

I have a TVO te20 and always run it on standard unleaded, it never does hard work just tows the little muck trailer and sometimes the chain harrows. Two years ago i rebuilt the carb, new fuel tank, new fuel filters and gave it a good service, runs like a dream.

I have a redundant T20 that tbh I can't think of much use for. It has been adjusted (timing I guess) years back to run on just petrol.
It kind of runs but have been told the dissy is a bit buggered anyway, it won't run at high revs for any length of time so no good on the sawbench.

If i fiddle about with it, service the carb and maybe replace the dissy (and heat shield) will it make a good economical dedicated sawbench tractor? Will the sawbench keep it hot enough to run on tvo?
I read somewhere that once switched onto tvo the fuel economy is much better in terms of amount used. Is that right?
If I remember correctly the fergie distributor was a needle roller affair very popular with the car racing boys of the time as it was more reliable at higher revs. I know my cooper s had one reputed to be a 20. Maybe yours was borrowed one dark night:eek:

Thank you for all the advise on this forum conversation

Based on this thread we've just bought a Diesel 20!

I'm fine with points and timing, I've done them.
The tractor had been sat outside for decades unused, I rescued it and soon had it running but it wouldn't run a sawbench. I had cleaned the tank as best I could, even had the Hoover in there but I think that was still the cause of the starvation.

Uncle then told me " dissy has always been buggered on that". I guess he meant the spindle was worn.
There isn't a heat shield on it but I do have one
Uncle also told me it has the Howard reduction box in it which I didn't know.

I was driving this tractor aged 6, carting caulis with my Dad. Fancy putting a six year old to drive a tractor!
Still, it put me in good stead for when they sent me down the mines at 8 :D

ha, i nearly ran Dad down about that age. my legs wernt long enough to straddle the gearbox on the nuffield, so it was either clutch or brakes, but not both at the same time. It was fun at that age and had now idea how much knowledge was unknowingly absorbed.. Same with handling livestock,

If you want to run your TED solely on petrol it says in the manual to remove the exhaust manifold heat shield, we were still running a TED and a 35 TVO in the late 70s when the oil firms stopped supplying TVO, they advised us at the time to use 28 second house heating oil mixed with 4 star petrol at 8 parts house heating oil to 2 parts petrol, if the tractor was doing hard work we made it 7 to 3 mix

Some even use neat house heating oil ..........
I did , for years! and in many different engines and tractors! Still do in fact, on the very rare occasions my model "N" escapes its hut. There are two others which are run on 28 as well, and they are in use at ploughing matches. Never any problems.

I may have asked this before ?
should we worry about the lack of lead in the petrol in presumably a standard head
I use the redex in petrol too, u can see the colour change in the glass fuel bowl .
