Despite the availability of google these days, I've never been able to find out why we alter the clocks when we do. In the autumn it's about 2 months before the shortest day, but in the spring about 3 months after it. It can't be anything to do with the equinoxes, because the autumn one is in September.

Never understood it myself, the winter could be shortened by a month/six weeks if the clocks had gone forward mid February, the same amount of days after the shortest day as they went back before the shortest day.

As I understand it, we change the clocks on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the equinox. (y)

If you are on the equator the sun will be directly overhead during the spring and autumn equinoxes which makes them both the hottest time of the year -ie 2 hot seasons in spring and autumn!!

Our mid summer and mid winter are the coolest time of year on the equator.
