Growing your own veg

Couldn't say for sure, when I've suffered it's always been in the late spuds, and into August/September, never seen it in first or second earlies.

Usually shows like a furry mould under the leaf.

I've looked through books I've got and can't see anything just like yours are showing.

You could try signing up to blightwatch.co.uk they send out warnings when blight is likely in your part of the country.

False blight. Usually blight causes pretty much total collapse very quickly followed by a stink!

Oh dear.

In any event I went back to pick off any dodgy looking leaves, then spray. But, when I had a good look there were too many dodgy looking leaves so I cut everything below ground level.

Had three feeds of 1st early spuds so far, but disappointed as there were many, many more developing, it was going to be a bumper crop. The main crop that I dug were small. I'm leaving them alone for a while to see if they'll develop any bit further.

lifted the Nicola this morning as they are the most advanced of the earlies, lovely clean large tubers av. 1.39kg /tub(plant)
Also the Express which were the first planted, nice clean tubers more numerous but not as big as the Nicola av. 0.85kg /tub(plant)

Lady Krystl and Kestrel don't look ready yet, however the Setanta seem to be coming on fast :scratchhead:

Got a couple of ideas to tweak things next year.

Although classed as a second early, and you like Jacket potatoes you can leave Kestrel until the plants die back,20 weeks or so, almost maincrop style, they should then leave you some decent sizes.

Although you will need to keep an eye out for blight by then.

Reckon to make a good show potato because of the colour scheme.

Just lifted all the Lady Krystl................ all 5 of them

not many but bloody huge, nice shape, mostly clean but very slight signs of scab on a couple of the biggest ones. |Ave. 1.2kg per planter

Not as good as the Nicola but OK and better than the Express which may be dropped for next year.

Just the Kestrel left to lift of the earlies.

I'm also thinking of dropping Express next year, although I like the taste and texture they don't give quantity, might just try 'Jazzy', fairly new variety, but has a good right up.

I've 'Charlotte' almost ready, the haulm is losing colour now and sagging a little, then there'll just be 'Juliette' which I will keep going until the plant really gives up.

Had Charlotte last year, good variety but went with Nicola instead. Not tried Jazzy or Juliette, I'll be interested to see how you get on with them.

Looks like Setanta will be the first of the maincrop ready to lift and then Cara and Orla.

Kestrel, 5 plants yielded 1.1kg, very nice looking, big, clean tatties except for a bit of scab on a couple of the biggest.

Have re-used the tubs to try some cut and come again lettuce, beds are full and my urge to plant something got the better of me

Seems to be the same story with all the planters - all the tubers are at or above the level of the seed tuber. Next year I'll try putting the seed right near the bottom of the tub and earth them up as they emerge which should also protect them from any late frosts. Biggest upside is I've got some great compost/manure mix for next year........................ and a hell of a lot of earthworms :wideyed:  (y)

Getting more courgettes than we need so looking to pickle some. Think it's homegrown courgette, potato and leek soup tonight.

Why ridging up was done, keep ridging keep the stem growing up = more tubers

Thanks that's what I was now assuming based on my observations this year, l'd previously I'd assumed the tubers grew from the roots

A case of very pleased with this year's improvement on last year, mainly in terms of cleanness but was hoping for more yield, I'll get it right next year or the one after

Trying so many veg for the first time this year I've started keeping a garden journal so I can look up what I did when:whistle:

1. Looks Like I'll have plenty of runner beans in the next week or two
2. Courgettes are getting away from us
3. Nice to see a couple of Romanesco in the mixed cauli's I planted. Finally managed to grow a really nice, useable white cauli after 3yrs of trying

Carrot thinnings are big enough to start using as baby carrots this week so pretty much self sufficient for veg at the moment :D

Ah the good old days of hacking away at the multiple heads and roots of Doon Major  Ruta Otofte was a revelation

After we stopped growing (and shawing) swedes for the sheep and sucklers I swore I never wanted to see the f**king things again. This year I've been very brave and grown 5 (Brora) for winter. Reckon I can handle one a week rather than 20acres of the bloody things :nailbiting::bag:

Now where did I put my old shawing knife? :scratchhead:
