I have a bucket with tags, iodine, book etc, always stays with the calving cow's
Do you have a lid on the bucket? My cows always associate a bucket with food so a couple of times have pinched my book! Devil of a job to find in a straw yard in the half dark. So now use a tool box.

Fantastic square bucket, it always seems a shame to throw them away. Lots of uses

The lids make the best mini whiteboards ever (y)

EID for dairy, just ordinary for beef, also don't tissue sample beef

Same here and that's why I tag the calves. There's plenty of other jobs I can delegate off that aren't as important as getting the tags in the right animals.

Agree tagging is an important job, and best kept in one person's domain. With the best will in the world, it's me and the husband who would have to sort any problems arising from tagging/identification errors, and who would suffer any consequences. Asking someone else, less invested, to take charge would be a big leap.

We had a visit from a trading standards guy for something a few years ago and he was impressed with the collar system. My records are kept so I can always trace where a calf was born, and what else was born on the same day, if there's an issue.

It is also amazing how many times I am told x cow has calved, and she hasn't, or y cow has had twins. The delay in tagging allows the dust to settle and any mistakes come to light.

I can see though, that there are advantages to doing it straight away - it becomes a mammoth task if left too long. I once had to tag about 40 bull calves at once because the tags had taken ages to arrive - I was thankful for collars that year!

Does anyone use once a day milk powder?

Hopefully going to try it this autumn....should hopefully save some time...
we have used a OAD powder in the past until it was pointed out to me it was no different to TAD powders it was just marketing I fell for:(:(.
So now we use a TAD powder OAD which is of a higher spec( less vegetable material) and cost less money(y)
