New Dmax 1.9

Sorry to start another new thread but couldn't find the other one. Has anyone bought one or used one in anger? Friend of mine is thinking of buying one. He's had a demo and quite likes it but bit concerned about the smaller engine's longevity. He tows a fair bit but also does a lot of miles without a trailer. Btw he's had two or three Isuzu pickups and been very happy so not keen on another make. His other option is to buy a fairly new secondhand 2.5.

Had one for 48 hour test. 1 day solo went OK for running about and drove it fairly hard up the 68 to Kelso and back so a good long run of mixed driving next day trailer on Loaded well up Sssshhh. Don't tell how much on no Gil to speak of pulled no worse than puma land rover 36 mpg solo never checked with trailer It just needs seats out of a land cruiser in it and would be fine. You have to drive it needs egr dpf delete and remap would get rid of that lag around 15/1900 rpm

It's the fella that buys it after him that needs to worry about longevity! As your man has had 2 or 3 isuzu's I'm guessing he'll swap before warranty is up.

I tried the 1.9 for a day and felt sharper than my 2.5 dmax. Also towed empty cattle trailer well enough. I was skeptical that the new model would be up to the job but maybe size isn't everything!

Haven't rushed to trade in for a new one though. Someone else can find any issues with the new engine....

Oh and the demo was an auto and didn't seem to suffer from the stupid throttle lag mine does when pulling away.

Crap paintwork, throttle lag, dpf shenanigans and the fact that they upgraded software and changed filter housing and converted it into a right greedy buzzard  Averages 22 to 24 but other than that been ok!

My 2.5 averages 17 mpg but has a 14' stock trailer practically welded on. I'm really not sure the 1.9 would suit me with so much heavy towing....

Isnt it power output that matters? a 3.1TD Trooper was 110hp, there are Ford 2.0TDCI in many cars/vans putting out 210hp... would the Trooper really pull more?

It's the torque and the gearing that gives them the pulling power. A standard 2.0 tdi car will tow a trailer no worries but first gear is never low enough to pull off with or to go up farm tracks etc!!!

From what I understand they've altered the gearing in the 1.9 which is my biggest bug bear with the 2.5. 6th gear practically useless with a trailer.

I'll certainly be giving it a try when current one due a swap. Best truck I've ever owned.

As a farmer and Isuzu dealership mechanic, I can assure you that the new d-max 1.9 is just as good as the 2.5!! As for the towing, I've been using one now for the past month and I can assure you it tows just as well, with 1 tonne and with 4 tonnes....:D:rolleyes::whistle:!! 6th gear though is not for towing and the dealer should of stated that just as they do to us when on manufacturer training, it's considered more of a cruising gear!!! As for Longevity, that's just something we are all waiting to find out as with any new vehicle that hits the market. Personally, I think if the 2.5 is anything to go by then the 1.9 will be just as successful!!!!

No it wouldn't. Anything over 100hp and 300Nm torque can pull 3.5 tons of trailer quite adequately if not legally. While I still think that the Isuzu Trooper 3.1 is the best all-round towing vehicle that I've ever had, its power output and fuel economy is completely outclassed by today's vehicles including every pickup I can think of in the 1 ton payload class which all have 150hp or more and at least 350Nm torque.

Many exceed 180hp and 400Nm which is a far cry from my 1988 Range Rover factory diesel which was 112hp 265Nm, but nothing under 2200rpm whatsoever. Nevertheless I never complained about its towing ability and it never had any issues in the near 100,000 miles I ran it.

Doesn't the proprietor's son run the depot? Perhaps that's the way they want the service department run?
You might be right. I find him helpful enough but I've told him, as have others, that he needs to sort it or lose customers. I've told him in no uncertain terms that I'm not going back for another vehicle until there are changes in attitude.

We had one on demo, towing loaded a loaded livestock trailer the plus was it would pull away in first high where our current 2.5 has to go in low range.
However once moving I found uphill it struggles and had to be in a gear lower than the 2.5 and on occasions couldn't get out of first!
We have had 6 Isuzu over the years this is the first time I've gone mmmmmm
