New Dmax 1.9

Although the 1.9 is still twin turbo, so should pull hard just off tickover with the tiny turbo boosting and the larger one taking over as revs rise to bolster the mid - high rpm range, the way modern engines are mapped for emissions just totally strangles them. With an egr delete and remap it would be a different animal.

What are the power and torque figures for the 1.9?

I've bought a 2.0l amarok bi turbo which is "only" 180hp, but gives 400nm of torque at 1500 up to 2000rpm. It tows 12foot ifor with 2tonne of lamb inside with ease. You need to rev it high to get the 180hp,but once (rapidly) up to speed, the torque holds it there in all but sixth gear which is too high for 50mph towing.

All the disscussion is about power, it really should be about chassis strength , especially around the hitch attachment area, ground clearance and vulnerable bits hanging down..
Quality of the steel and paint , How well the four link rear suspension stands up to heavy towing etc,
And how well does 2 WD stand up to 200 hp or does it eat rear tyres

Yes there much more important factors in purchasing a working vehicle.

One area where LR have always been miles ahead is permanent 4wd. Originally done because the V8 in the RR was a bit too powerful to run through the rear axle. But they soon realised how much better it was and made it a selling point.

My ranger would definitely benefit from such a system.

From what I understand they've altered the gearing in the 1.9 which is my biggest bug bear with the 2.5. 6th gear practically useless with a trailer.
However once moving I found uphill it struggles and had to be in a gear lower than the 2.5 and on occasions couldn't get out of first!
When will they learn?
They just keep making them higher and higher geared, so that the fuel consumption figures look good. That's OK for the top of the range models (fancy trim, leather seats, chrome load bay covers etc) bought by posers to use as a car (do some of them know what the tow ball is for?) but when you use them as a workhorse you find you have to set off in low box half of the time:facepalm:

speaking to a dmax driver the other night, he had no idea what 4wd low did and had never used it

Specialist company, Alive Tuning. They did a real good job with my defender a few years back. They're based in Louth Lincolnshire but have agents all over the country. It's like night and day now, will put traction control on in 5th if you drive it daft [emoji16][emoji16]

Too true. I'm hopefully wrong but sometimes wonder if the chassis will outlast the engine, with the d-max anyway. Swilling diesel onto cylinder walls and down in to the sump by constant regenerating of dpf does not fill me with confidence.

Though to be fair it's been a good enough pickup, issues aside. Despite frequent regens of late the oil level has never really risen, though she may be burning a bit of oil and topping up with diesel  Being auto I've never had problems with 1st gear being too high with a full trailer though in steep field gates I've dropped into low box for ease. It's fast enough on the motoway, happily tow all day and there are worse places to sit than d-max cabin as never been really uncomfortable on a long journey. It 'yucks' a bit with empty GH triaxle cattle trailer, though the Aussie lads on their d-max forum reckon Isuzu factory fit dampers aren't up to much! Rough local roads don't help. Fuel consumption is a bit too heavy but never expect a lot from a pickup.

Isn't the towing capacity drastically reduced with that option?

Ford dealer gave me a brochure the other day. In it, it says that the 2.2 has the option of 'economy' or 'towing' final drive and according to their figures towing capacity drops from 3500 to 2500kg with economy final drive. Don't think 'economy' is an option with the 3.2 - only power and speeed

Anyone with a VW Amorak - is servicing and parts expensive?

I have had the 1.9 over a weekend to test and sorry to say not impressed at all absolutely fine unloaded and with an empty trailer on it went fine no rocket ship but it's a truck returned good mpg the trouble came when we loaded 2.3 tons of tractor weight blocks onto my flat trailer and took it for a test on a fairly good hill at the bottom of the hill there is a sign we made sure to be doing 30mph at the sign in 3rd then foot flat down up the hill by half way up the hill it was down into 1st gear struggling hit the top at 15mph we then repeated the test with my 2.4 defender it managed to do 20mph in 2nd by the top we then did the test with our 11reg navara it was doing 35mph in 3rd by the top and no it didn't snap in half. The isuzu is a nice truck for those that don't want to do any real towing but we found it to be constantly up and down the gears on country roads where the navara was a pleasure very rarely changing gear. As good as my navara has been I will be having a ranger next they are the truck at the moment.

Chassis strength?

Ten year old navara's don't need any strength to still be towing.....

This is one of the cracks that is in mine. Other bits you can put your finger through! Nissan said it's fine to continue using until they make the buy out offer.
