I`ve ordered a set of Metcalfe coulters for my co4 with an extra set of bean seed tubes. Have anyone tried theese? How much extra disturbance does the wider seed tube cause?
We made a set ourselves this year for peas and beans. It's a seed pipe without the pinch at the bottom and a little hardfacing where the sides are exposed behind the coulter tip. It worked fine and you wouldn't really see the extra disturbance.
I kept all my old tubes as they wear and opened up any with the pinched ends, just keep the angle right the air flow will blow peas and beans right in the bottom of the slot.even at depth disturbance is still very minimum.
Do all our drilling with the Metcalf point on our CO8. No problems with row spacing in osr, cover crops, barley wheat beans.good to help reduce black grass.
I find it ok if drilling wheat direct with the wide rows as your not disturbing the blackgrass. However if your drilling into cultivated ground I want as much ground cover as possible for competition against the blackgrass.
How much bigger are the bean tubes? I've got some winter beans to drill this year but I've struggled with spring beans in the past and I'm worried they won't go down.
Also what depth to go direct for winter beans? Only got 210hp on co6 so a bit limited.
Why cultivate if you have a black grass problem? We still stick to the wide rows as even if you have cultivated once sprayed off you are disturbing less ground.i use worn out tubes cut the ends to get the right angle or they will block, the beans go through and blow down behind the leg no problem.as hp requirement is so little compared to the duett drilling at 3-4" in good conditions should be ok.
I don't grow wheat on bad blackgrass land but have to cultivate some at the moment as we are using sludge etc but I get your point re wide rows, will do more wheat with it this year.
Will also try some beans if I can find enough old tubes to modify.
Let's hope the weather settles down so we get ideal conditions ,I have less Hp this year going from 525 down to 360 so could be interesting when drilling beans with the 8m.
I had a trial run yesterday but without seed in, could pull it ok to about 4 inches. As you say if conditions are in our favour that should be ok.
Could you put up a picture of your bean tube modifications please?
