750A spoked gauge wheels

I know it's an old thread but, I am getting a lot of stalling depth wheels, the discs are about 250 acres old and building packed mud against the disc and depth wheel and back of depth wheel (gauge wheel) especially behind the tractor wheels (cant show pic as dropped iphone in the field yesterday) the gap is about 3- 5mm every now and again having to clear the discs wheels with a screwdriver, i have dust coming up behind the drill and would say conditions not far off nearly good to good, we are rolling behind slot closing fairly well, i wondered whether better to get a set of spoked wheels, are there different options and do other manufacturers make them to fit, or is it a waste of time and carry on and stop moaning.

Regards Big Al

If your gap between the disc and gauge wheel is between 3 and 5 mm then it's too wide, technically it should be 3 but you could go less than that if required. If it's really wet you can go tight enough so that the gauge wheel lip just wipes the disc, however you'd need to space them back out again in drier conditions otherwise you'll damage the lip on the tyre. You obviously weren't paying attention in your class!

Get a set of spoked wheels. We wouldn't be able to work this year without them. And crops are emerging perfectly behind us so happy to drill in sticky conditions

Cheers Simon hope you are well will try this first, but think our soil is clagier than yours, not saying the garden of eden is any better in any way, you must be on holiday and finished weeks ago, the sun always shines on the righteous.

I had exactly this problem yesterday. Where I'm drilling wheat after beans I have no problem but wheat after linseed is causing this. I came to the conclusion that the linseed took far less moisture out and although the very top is dry the soil is far stickier just under the crust. The gap between the lip of the gauge wheel and disc is about 3mm but as soil builds on the disc it pushes the rubber further away.

Yes the rubber pushes away from the disc as soil builds up, never had this problem untill this year, been drilling on a two year grass ley and it has cleaned all the discs up like new, was going to shim them up but a lot of them that were problem discs behind tractor wheels almost touching the disc anyway as i shimmied under it but will try and get an even disc to gauge wheel gap across the drill nearly touching not sure this will fix though, and i have a golfing trip organised from wednesday in spain, thought we would of been finished by now but so did most of us, bugger :nailbiting:

Eventually, the mud will tear the lip off the gaugewheel tyre, creating an even bigger gap

I will only say four words

Gaugewheel steel scraper rings

You know you need them

Meh,
Most gaugewheel style disc planters ( with gaugewheel running beside disc, gauging the depth, whether single disc or double disc openers ) would run some style of steel scraper rings here. Different soil types or how soft or tight & compacted your soil is obviously make a big difference

Like this when cleaned out they are close if not scraping the disc.

I bet it would. With the normal wheels there's nowhere for the mud to go
But they aren't filling with mud in mine and what little bit that gets in is coming out the back. It is just literally a sticky mud that is building on the face of the disc that the rubber isn't scraping off. @Feldspar seems to have the same and he has got spoked wheels.
