Were you that impressed by this chip? Do you think it really did raise the hp to 216?
How easy was it to fit? Do you still have the fitting instructions?

Did you play around with the High and Low buttons and did this have much of an effect?

I run a 2155, which is identical in every respect to a 2170, except that the chip is slightly different to produce just 11 hp less.
Yet the price difference between the tractors new was £4,000!

JCB claimed that this was down to what Cummins would charge them.
I would bet that JCB didn't pay £4,000 to Cummins for either engine!

Yes was really impressed with the chip it gave the tractor a bit more punch hanging in hills, it just made it a bit more smoother the way it presented the power and believe me it had the power. Really easy to fit disconnect plug off of the common rail plug in chip on the rail then plug original rail plug into chip. Will fit on tractor in less than 5mins

I don't suppose you know if your chip for your 2170 is exactly the same one as they would use on the 2155?
Would it mention so on the instructions?

Thanks @Rjnjcb2135 for sending me the chip. Had a hell of a job getting the (old) plug off the fuel rail. But it did come off eventually and the Chip (Express) box and new wiring was really easy to fit.

The Engine fired up straight away and everything works as it should.

Got a couple of loads of Barley to take into a local mill at Enstone tomorrow using a 14 tonne Western trailer. I have to go up a long hill for over a mile that drags the Fastrac down to about 21 kph using High range 4th gear snail (lowest) split.

I am looking forward to what the chip will do to increase the speed and see what gear she will make it up in.
I'll let you know.

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your email. Here is a link to a thread on The Farming Forum regarding the subject which I am sure you will be very interested in:

I am “Two Tone” and “Rjnjcb2135” is Robert Xxxxxxxx, from Cornwall, who you sold the original kit to for his Fastrac 2170.

I can’t tell you how impressed I am with your product, albeit bought 2nd hand from Robert. It has completely transformed our 2155 Fastrac.

Without the chip, the tractor would struggle up that hill.
As I’d start to go up it, I’d have to change down gears to keep the engine revs above 1,500 RPM as follows:
6th highest (Hare) split, to
6th middle (Tortoise) split, to
6th lowest (Snail) split, THEN missing out all 3 splits in 5th gear, now having using the (foot) clutch, go to
4th middle (Tortoise) split, to
4th lowest (Snail) split, hoping like hell that I could avoid having to drop into 3rd gear! Forward speed is now down to about 21 kph

With the chip, I can forget ever having to miss out all of the 5th gears as follows:
6th highest (Hare) split, to
6th middle (Tortoise) split, to
6th lowest (Snail) split, then using the clutch, go to
5th middle (Tortoise) split, to
5th lowest (Snail) split, which she will pull all the way up that hill at comfortably! Forward speed is up at about 30 kph
I am over the moon about it. As I am sure, is all the traffic that used to get stuck behind me! The hill in question is on the A3400, just south of Long Compton. It is a 1.25 miles drag of about 1:10.
Also impressive is that the engine now has far more torque at lower than the 1,500 RPM, which the engine would seem to give up at.

Anyway, hope that this helps you. Sorry not to have bough it from you new. I must admit as to having been very sceptical about chips, hence my being tempted to buy this 2nd hand version from Robert.

As mentioned on the thread. In 2014, I purchased one of the very last new 2155 Fastracs because it was £4,000 cheaper than the 2170. Both tractors are 100% identical except for the ECU, which determines the horsepower differences. Our dealer, Geoff Lockwood of Lower Quinton Garages, told me that if I wasn’t happy with the power of the 2155, that they could fit a chip that would take the engine to over 200 hp for about £395. I wonder if it was your chip that they were talking about?

Taking grain in I can go all the way in 4th plus splitters , so long as I don't have to stop , not a fan of changing gear .

I think you mean 6th, not 4th.
What might be confusing you is that you probably start of in 3rd, not 1st. Missing out 1st and 2nd altogether.

Another thing that I have noticed is how much better the Fastrac will pull up a long hill if you put it into 4WD.

Sometime we have a problem, particularly if pulling an empty trailer up hill at a "T" junction, losing traction.
Why couldn't JCB used a diff between the front and rear axles like Land-rover do? This would have meant permanent 4WD using a diff lock to get even better traction when needed.

It would also have meant even tyre ware between the front and rear axles.

Another thing I tend to do, is use the clutch when changing the splitter up (never down) a gear at high speed in 4th, 5th and 6th gear. I hope that doing so will keep my 2155 going for much longer than exposing it to violent jerking to the transmission. By using the clutch you can also jump 2 splits, especially with that chip!

I'm not a fan yet of the 4000 series with its's Vario transmission. When they have been about for 6 years without any transmission problems, I might change my mind. But I am very confident that my 2155 will last many years without problems. It needs to, because IMO, JCB should not have stopped building them. Enough sophistication without being way OTT!

You cannot escape the fact that the most efficient way of transmitting engine power to the wheels is by gears. As soon as you put hydrostatics into the equation, you might gain driving pleasure, but you waste efficiency and will get serious trouble eventually. It might be great when it is new, but a serious bill will loom!

I also like the original Perkins and later Cummins engines a lot too.

No , 4th it's uphill generally and the trailer isn't hi speed spec , no prizes for setting the trailer on fire

What tyre pressures are you running? Seems strange getting wheel slip pulling out at a junction and using 4wd going up hills on road.
