wanted metal detecting permission

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for permission to metal detect on farm land in the prudhoe, ryton, stocks field areas please.

I have been beach detecting for the last 2 years and now have a minelab se pro metal detector that searches very deep for those lost coins, rings and artifacts.

I have a mdnc number, proff of indentity and will remove all metals found, will fill in any holes and will split anything over the value of 5 pounds found and will declare all finds to you and the adhere to the metal detecting finds rules and report anything over 300 years old to my local finds officer.

This would be my first land permission so I know it's going to be hard trusting me, however, I'm a 45 year old gent that's disabled and looking to get out of the house, get some exercise and enjoying the outdoors whist swinging a metal detector.

I will always be friendly, explain everything I'm doing and always carry letters for proff of being allowed on your land and answer any questions you may have.

Thank you for the link, that's a very not interesting conversation your not having lol.

I'm quite a distance from you bring up the northeast, and its very hard finding permissions up here, which is why I posted here rather than invade another post.

I'm a rather shy person so I don't have the confidence to go knocking on doors asking for permissions, maybe I should man up a bit.

Hopefully someone will see this post and give me a chance, I know all farmers are friendly folk.

And thank you for the correction ncmd ! Got it lol

Hints & tips.....

1.Ask family/friends .... you are never more than 3 links from a bit of land.
2.Join a Club.
3.Beach`s are "free" if owned by the Crown Estate.
4.If you are going to ask farmers then timing is everything. Sunday afternoon at tea time isn`t good!
5.Google local farms, get a name, don`t faff about & don`t ask for the whole farm, takes whats offered.

Apart from that....yep... man up! The worst that will happen is they say "No". :)

I'm already on Facebook and with groups on there but most of the digs are miles away from me, and I only drive on L plates so very hard to get there, which is why I'm looking in my very local area.

I have no idea if there is anyone very local to me ( within walking distance) but we shall hope and see.

I gave you permission to detect on my land in September 2016 but you didn't turn up as arranged, nor did you let me know you weren't coming. I spent two hours cutting long grass in one of the fields, all for nothing. Now it's a flat NO to anyone who asks.

Yes you did, and I am very sorry I didn't contact you. My wife had a very bad fall and broke her hip and had to have her hip replaced and we have had a very long road of recovery and to be very honest, I had forgotten our arrangement.

I do feel rotten for letting you down, and a lot can happen in 2 years even in farming, and wasn't sure if you were still around to and chat to, but I do understand your disappointment in me.

So again I am very sorry for your wasted work and I shall of course leave this forum with my tail between my legs and return to beach detecting and organised digs when the summer returns.

I have found and seen that once a detectoriest has a bad name, there is no chance in hell in them given a second chance, so I won't even try.

Good luck everyone

I have to say, I am in total agreement with this policy. Hightower's story is very sad and I am sorry to hear about his wife's accident. I hope she is making a good recovery. On the other hand, that is not F996's problem. I'm afraid I would (and do) react the same way in similar circumstances.

I'm also sorry to hear about Mrs H and I hope all is now well but you should have let me know. Even if it was a few days/weeks later, I would have understood.

I've just looked through my phone and I took a photo the day I cut the grass. It reminded me that my topper (grass cutter) broke and I had to walk back to the house to fetch an emergency repair kit so it would have been nearer 3 hours. It wasn't just the time spent cutting the grass. There was the time replying to TFF posts plus several emails exchanged regarding the history of the land - being close to Hadrian's Wall and other areas of interest - plus at least one phone call.

I used to enjoy metal detecting as a child and I've had a few here but the last one let me down a couple of times. After that, I decided to charge for it and I believe we agreed on £10 for the day. But now, as per my previous post, I've stopped allowing it altogether. Maybe I will buy my own kit some day.

Good luck finding somewhere but remember that a farmer's time is precious, unlike the vast majority of a detectorist's finds.

Dry Rot , I agree, I would do exactly the same as well so I have no hard feelings towards farmer996 what so ever,it was my fault entirely that I didn't let him know.

Farmer996

, yes again, my fault entirely, yes she has made a good recovery but she was off her feet a good 6 months before she could really start putting weight on it ect, but she is walking properly now and so why I was going to look again, but clearly I have upset quite a few people here and so won't get a second chance which I totally agree with and understand

I'm very sorry you went to all the trouble of cutting your grass and the break down, if I had a way of making it up to you I would please believe that.

I have to admit I have upgraded my detector, its not the Viking I had, this is a more powerfull machine and cost me 600 pounds as its in very good condition, but if you do take it up, good luck and I hope you find a monster hoard of gold coins.

One last time I am sorry for the trouble that I caused you and hope you can forgive me.

My partner broke her leg in June 2015. It snapped right next to the hip. It was a similar operation and recovery period to a hip replacement so I know exactly where you're coming from in that respect. I do forgive you but I'm not changing my stance. All the best with it.

Hi all,
I am a respectful history seeker with liability insurance looking for farmland to detect on. all finds are 50/50 and I will never waste your time. I know building trust will take time and I am only available on weekend's as I work full-time as a warehouse manager. All equipment are headphone based so no noisy beeps and full respect given to the boindries set.

Could the metal detector permission requesters please think about Why someone who owns a bit of land let anyone else come and wander about it freely for their own pleasure and leisure.
In most other cases... people who use land for recreation have to pay handsomely for it.... thinking quad bike tracks, woodland adventure, dog exercise paddock etc
Why would a farmer Let anyone come and wander around their farm and then dig holes in it and then potentially profit from any treasure found ?
That doesn’t sound like a good deal for the farmer at all

and before anyone comments that I’m a miserable old beggar
I let a small metal detecting club come onto my farm ONCE a year for a day
They each pay £20 into a hat and the money is donated to McMillan Cancer

i would be happy to pay a small fee for myself to attend someones land to metal detect, id split anything worth any value whatsoever with the land owner and report all finds over 300yr old to my local finds officer, i have my ncmd card, id take away and recycle all scrap metal recovered if the land owner doesnt want it, which also helps clean up the paddocks/fields for the livestock or crops,
