What do you do when a Pikey drives on the yard?

umm, just a question - how much scrap do you fellas generate or have lying around the place if you constantly have people asking for it ??? :scratchhead::scratchhead:
it's not just farms, either. Here on the edge of the South coast sprawl, you see them out and about constantly round the skips in the industrial estates, and even in urban back gardens. My Land Rover tinkering builder mate always has an axle or something on his drive and has to be on constant alert if he wants to keep it. This is on a residential street in the middle of Bournemouth.

Firm I used to work for was constantly threatened with going bust, redundancies etc. so it was no surprise one day when a fairly smartly dressed man appeared in our office carrying a clipboard asking to see if we had any large metallic work in progress items for an asset list? The building was key entry and we all had to wear passes, he seemed genuine and I told him where the store room was. Five minutes later he appeared again with a broken clipboard and being held in a half nelson by the head of the workshop who promptly kicked him out the fire door !
I had failed to notice the pick up with a couple of washing machines in the back parked in the car park. o_O

I'm always polite to them. They can do me more harm than I can to them. I am traceable they are not! We often get asked if we want a bit of Tarmac doing, "rented farm mate, you need to speak to the landlord" normally gets them off the farm!

It's hare coarser that we suffer with most.
Yes always be tidy with them.
Some farmer's tell to F off to start with .
They got plenty of time to cut your fence wire - burn your barn - get free lamb chops etc. etc.?

Unfortunately maths isn't their strongest point, I'd had a quote from a local firm for some tarmac to be layed, I watched them measure the area in question, it was an odd shape altogether..
Within a few hours along came this gang of chancers, so I asked how much to do the job, he came back with X per sq metre, I said "no how much to do the job" his metre price sounded reasonable to be fair, but he came up with twice the area the pro had stated, by just measuring the widest point and multiplying it by the length and then adding a bit extra for good luck.

The last white Transit pick up that called here left his business card which had the name of a genuine auctioneer based a few miles away. They were doing a special auction for used batteries, oh and any old metal gates if they were cluttering the place up. When questioned about his bona fides, chap reckoned he had worked with several of the experts from "Bargain Hunt".
is there any such thing as a genuine auctioneer

Farmer round here had them snake charm they way to fill a few pot holes on his lane - next thing he had the barber green turn up and gang to lay the lot and he was "sh-ting"himself as the guy said 'No you have entered a verbal agreement to do the lane ' the farmer had hell of a job to stop em but he did after various helped him.

They can be latched open on busy days by sending a text , but pressing a button or dialling a number when half way up farm drive means they are open when you get there and isn’t really a lot of effort

Anyone who needs legitimate access like employees, agronomist etc all get the number so they can dial themselves in - you can restrict hours or remove permissions and check logs to see who came and went when if you have need to do so

Makes the yard feel 1000% more secure - seems mad they were ever open and anyone could drive or wander around our yard in the past now

I just had someone round to discuss new gate opener and the chap is telling me that if I need to add or delete phone numbers for the gate access, that I will have to contact him and he will do this. Is this usual for the gate installer to have control of our intercom? I would like to be in control of this myself so just wanted a bit of advice please @Clive

I just asked for a copy of the software so I could do the management of numbers myself which they were happy to let me have, it’s very straight forward

I’m also told there is a gate managment app coming soon for our system so you will be able to make changes from a smart phone

But they will also make changes if I want and don’t charge for doing so

Can you pse give some details of the gates. I've always assumed they would be a pain in everyday use but yours sound ideal in the way you can operate them

See this post earlier in the thread

It was about £2000 fitted to existing gates by a local company http://midlandcontrolsystems.co.uk/commercial/ could have been cheaper but we have a pair of gates and fitted double actuators to each so it cant be simply rammed open, a single gate with single ram (like I have at home) would cost less - costs about £5/month in SIM charges but our yard is busy with several business using it, I have the same system at home and £20 PAYG sim has lasted 2 years already and still going strong on lighter use

Edited to add the entry system is made by Telgaurd

Your gate has gsm dialer. SIM card. Just text gate a code followed by number to add or delete. Can do it with laptop to check when gate opened but never bothered.
