Prostate cancer

I have just been listening on radio 2 someone talking about prostrate cancer and it is very common and men seem to try and forget about symtoms and it is not easy to diagnose early

Kills more men than breast cancer kills women. Gets less than 1/3 of the funding.

Having recently been to the Drs with a ball-bag related problem, the feedback from the Dr was that even if it turned out to be nothing that most chaps wouldnt have gone to see him and just put it to the back of their minds. Silly men.

Given that most deaths due to prostate cancer are because of late diagnosis, what are the symptoms that would tell us that we should go to the Doc's?
No doubt there will be symptoms in some, maybe most, men I would imagine. But the thing that stuck in my head this morning from the radio discussion was the fact that you can have prostate cancer and have no symptoms, men have found they have had cancer just from it being picked up in routine medical checks when they have felt fine otherwise. List of symptoms here though: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/prostate-cancer/symptoms/

Probably more important to get checked out for enlarged prostate as it can have similar symptoms to prostate cancer. It's easy enough to do initial tests yourself by completing the questionaire below. Statistically, "20% of men at the age of 40 years had an enlarged prostate, 70% at age 60, and 90% by the age of 80 years old". I have now had the op twice and probably heading for a third!

If you are worried about it, have a look at what Billy Connely had to say -- but don't just sit there and suffer in silence, get it done!

Saw this thread a while ago while looking at the bad-back one, and now I've something to add...

Mrs Danllan's father had a scare with PC a few years ago and she lost a most beloved aunt and a grandmother to breast cancer so she is rather sensitive to the subject as a whole.

I've had a bad back for a while - I am certain from pulling haylage loose in a ring feeder - and have recently got up in the night to use the toilet a few of times. With the boss putting 2 and 2 together she is now ordering me to see the GP...

I think @Shutesy is quite right in saying that most of us will have some symptoms but, having spoken to a friend who is a Doc, it would seem that 'better safe than sorry' is the way forward in this. Probably nothing, but from a bit of muscle strain and drinking too late in the evening (usually tea!), between them Mrs Danllan and said friend have now got me thinking. I'm hoping the 'test' won't be worse than the old Army medicals .

Don't worry! The digital examination is a bit embarassing but I diverted my attention by thinking of the poor doctor! Your problems are probably just an enlarged prostate. You can score your own symptoms here (and I'd suggest all males reading this should do likewise):

In the unlilkely event that you have prostate cancer, it is the best form of cancer to get, if you have to have it, as it is neatly packaged and unlikely to spread unless neglected.

I've had two ops for enlarged prostate by green light laser surgery. I was the 35th person to have this in the UK but had to go back a few years later for a repeat as measurements left to a local urologist weren't done correctly. This surgery is now available at a number of hospitals throughout the country and involves no more than a couple of days in hospital. In the USA, it is an out patient procedure.

Nothing much to worry about, just don't neglect to get it looked at asap. I also think there will be a waiting list for surgery so another reason not to wait. Sorry, can't help with the back as I have one too. Just take it easy and let the youngsters do the lifting!

Thanks @Dry Rot, I appreciate that. @Still Farming the humour isn't lost on me, I've had a chat with a *friend* this morning who went through the fun of such an exam' a couple of years ago, the B*stard just sent me this link:

He's a vet', so has a fairly twisted sense of humour anyway, but after some Corporal Jones references he was pretty reassuring ... but, and I hate to use the Americanism, it is literally my ars* on the line in this case so I'm minded to get some revenge sooner or later... :sneaky:
