Nightmares

Here's a question... Does stress cause really horrible nightmares? Last night I woke up from a horrific one. It was about my elder brother, I dreamt someone murdered him and the grief just consumed me. As of late these nightmares have become frequent and I end up waking about 6-7am instead of 8:30 in a bit of panic, heart really beating very fast and cold sweats. Can anyone recommend what I can do to get rid of these unwanted and frankly scary dreams? They say it's usually because of an unsettled mind, which is true ATM.

Go and see a shrink

Thanks. However ik what she would say... She would refer me to a therapist who would then look into my background and probably give me meds to balance out my mental health along with anti depressants. I can cope well with my mental workings, just sometimes this occurs and it drives me insane. But I don't want to be on meds for the rest of my life...

Sometimes best way is to get up early as said and do a shift before breakfast to try to get the "to do" list knocked down a bit. That way there is less to worry about.

I find virus's cause me to have nightmares, usually along the lines of all the cattle have got out, stuff like that.

Night Nurse can give nightmares so maybe avoid that if you look for something to knock you out!

Worst I had was about 8 years ago, it was so vivid and I can still remember every single little detail today, which is odd as they're normally forgotten pretty quickly after the event.

Long and short of it I was tied to a post and shot by a WW2 firing squad. Weird thing was when I jarred awoke with the 'shot' I had a genuine pain in my chest, weird.

Anybody ever had a living nightmare?

Everything is fine while you are asleep, pleasant dreams etc. then you wake up and remember all the crap you have to deal with.

Being asleep is great as you forget the problems and they don't exist or have been solved in a dream, then you wake up and it's all still there.

That's the worst tbh. I had it for a few years and then things got better ;)

Could have been to do with your heart or bad indigestion or such. They say your feelings do effect how you dream.

Yes.
Life may be "getting easier with all this progress" but as a result it is also much more unnatural at the same rate.

Learn to meditate, changed my life, probably saved my life tbh.
Once you can switch off then you can be really switched off and really switched on, and probably need less sleep to feel well rested.

Or yoga...

As above meditation & clearing "head space".
If there is something pending in your life try and focus on the positive part..... you will come out the otherside no matter how cr** it seems at the time.

Always puzzles me when people say 'sweet dreams'. Never had a sweet dream in my life that I can remember. Mrs Y had to wake me up at 1am this morning 'cos I was in the throes of an entrapment nightmare.

Happens all the time especially when you wake an hour early in the morning and can't go back to sleep thinking about things going wrong and what you have to do.

Learn to breathe - listen to your breathing, once you have mastered that, I found you can do it anywhere, even in a noisy environment I can completely shut off, un listening.
I have had nightmares all my life, very vivid, they are rarer now than they once were, except if I have to take medication, if in the night I wake in terror, I can listen to my breathing and then 'fly', it sounds really silly putting it in words, but just start by listening to you breathing and once your mind is settled picture yourself taking off over a familiar place, look down on familiar things, once you can do the familiar, you can take yourself anywhere, and can achieve that state in seconds.
